Sony has officially unveiled the new Sony Xperia 1 VIII, bringing notable camera upgrades, a refreshed design, and the latest flagship chipset while keeping several signature Xperia features that longtime fans still appreciate.

The biggest highlight this year is the telephoto camera, which now uses a much larger 1/1.56-inch 48MP sensor. Sony says this sensor is four times larger than the one used in the previous Xperia 1 VII, while also offering four times the resolution. This should deliver significantly better zoom shots with improved detail and low-light performance.

The rest of the camera system remains familiar, consisting of a 48MP main camera with a 1/1.35-inch sensor, paired with a 24mm f/1.9 lens and OIS, alongside a 48MP ultra-wide camera using a 1/1.56-inch sensor with a 16mm f/2.0 lens. On the front, users get a 12MP selfie camera with a 1/2.9-inch sensor and a 24mm f/2.0 lens.

Sony also says RAW multi-frame processing is now available across all cameras, helping improve dynamic range and reduce image noise in low-light situations. This allows the phone to better preserve highlights and shadow details while producing cleaner shots overall.

Powering the Xperia 1 VIII is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, replacing last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. According to Sony, the new platform offers a 20% CPU performance boost, a 23% faster GPU, and up to 20% better power efficiency.

The base model comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, while higher-end variants go up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. One standout feature that remains is the microSD card slot, something that has become increasingly rare even among flagship smartphones.

Sony is also introducing AI Camera Assistant, powered by Xperia Intelligence and supported by the Snapdragon chip’s AI accelerator. The feature analyzes scenes by looking at subjects, weather conditions, and other environmental factors, then suggests camera adjustments such as color tones and lens effects. Users can apply the recommendations instantly or manually fine-tune settings themselves.

As expected from Sony, the 3.5mm headphone jack remains, continuing the company’s Walkman-inspired focus on audio. It allows users to enjoy lossless, latency-free wired audio without worrying about battery life. The phone also features symmetrical stereo speakers on both sides, which Sony says now deliver deeper bass, clearer highs, and a wider soundstage.

Some hardware aspects remain unchanged, including the 6.5-inch flat LTPO display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate and the 5,000mAh battery. The screen still avoids punch-hole cutouts by placing the front camera inside the top bezel, a design many users still prefer. However, the 1080p+ resolution may disappoint some, especially considering the Xperia series was once known for its 4K displays.

Charging speeds for the Xperia 1 VIII also stay the same at 30W wired and 15W wireless. While functional, both the battery capacity and charging speeds feel less competitive compared to other 2026 flagship devices.

The Xperia 1 VIII is available in four colors inspired by natural materials: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. Sony is also offering an official translucent case with a built-in stand that supports both portrait and landscape orientations while also being designed to resist yellowing over time.
