Unboxing

Design

OPPO Reno5 Review_2

The front of the OPPO Reno5 looks quite ordinary, which also looks quite similar to the Reno4. It now only has a single 32MP front-facing camera on the top left corner of the screen. Like most Android phones, the bottom bezel is thicker than the top one.

The power button is located on the right side with a green line on it, while the left side has the SIM slot and volume rocker. At the bottom, it has a 3.5mm audio jack, USB-C port, and a mono speaker grille. Yes, OPPO still retains the 3.5mm audio jack, which is not a common thing for phones nowadays.

The back of the phone looks quite similar to the Reno4, but OPPO has added a few touches to make the Reno5 looks even better. My review unit is the Galactic Silver variant that combines Reno Glow glass and Picasus nanofilm on the Diamond Spectrum body, which will reflect different colors from different angles.

Display

OPPO Reno5 Review_7

The OPPO Reno5 sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. OPPO made the right decision to opt for the AMOLED panel, which has a top-notch screen quality with deep black, though it’ll be oversaturated on high brightness. Additionally, having an AMOLED panel also allows OPPO to put an in-display fingerprint sensor, which performs but I do think it’s positioned a little bit too low.

Performance

The OPPO Reno5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. It’s not a new chipset but can still get the job done smoothly.

In terms of gaming, I was able to play Call of Duty: Mobile in “Very High” graphic quality and frame rate. As for PUBG Mobile, I was able to run “HD” graphics with “Ultra” frame rate. Changing it to “Smooth” graphics will let you play with “Extreme” frame rate, that’s the maximum performance.

Software

OPPO Reno5 Review_12

The OPPO Reno5 runs on ColorOS 11 based on Android 11. The latest version of ColorOS comes with a few new features and improvements. It allows you to easily customize the phone interface and there’s even a Personalizations section with new settings for Themes, Wallpapers, Always-On Display, Icon Styles, App Layout, and many more. You can even customize the dark mode with different levels of black and other settings.

ColorOS 11 also comes with the OPPO Relax app, an app for you to relax by playing different sounds from ambient noises to music. I don’t think most users will use this feature though.

It also comes with FlexDrop, which is OPPO’s version of a floating window. To use this feature, you first need to open the app, then go into the recent apps menu and tap the two dots button to open. You can also do it when you are swiping up from the bottom to access the recent apps menu, then halfway drag it to the Floating Window or Mini Window icon. You can straightaway drag a photo from the floating window and drop it on your Facebook feed to post images. However, not all apps support this feature and it needs a lot of polish.

It also comes with the Game Space app for you to switch to different modes while gaming. ColorOS 11 also comes with other Android 11 features such as the new notifications system, redesigned media player controls, etc.

Camera

OPPO Reno5 Review_16

The OPPO Reno5 packs a quad-camera setup on the back — 64MP f/1.7 main + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP macro + 2MP mono sensor. Basically, you can ignore the macro and mono cameras because they are there to make up the number. This time around, OPPO has added a lot of video features such as Ultra Night Video, Dual-view Video, Portrait Beautification Video, and Ultra Steady Video. As for taking selfies, it has a 32MP f/2.4 front-facing camera.

Image quality generally is quite good as expected. The ultra-wide photos tend to have a softer detail and warmer white balance. The phone shoots 12MP photos by default and you can switch to 64MP mode, but I don’t see the point to shoot high-res photos since it only has a tiny difference. Battery Life

OPPO Reno5 Review_17

The OPPO Reno5 packs a 4,300mAh battery and it supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0, which is able to charge the phone from 15% to full in just 35 minutes. In terms of battery life, the phone is able to last through a day easily with around 6 hours of screen-on-time before its battery turns red.

Final Words

OPPO Reno5 Review_18

Retailing at RM1,899, the OPPO Reno5 is now available at OPPO Official Online Store, Lazada, and Shopee. It is actually a good phone with a beautiful design, great display, satisfying performance, decent camera, and good battery life. The fact that it can be fully charged in 35 minutes really saves some people’s day. Let’s say you wake up in the morning realizing you didn’t charge the phone, you can charge it while getting yourself ready and the phone should be able to last the entire day. However, ColorOS might not be everyone’s taste, it depends on your personal preference. The OPPO Reno5 might seem to be an ordinary phone, but it has all the essential features that many people need, though at this price tag you can actually get a phone with a high-end chipset.

Yay

  • Beautiful design
  • Great display
  • Good battery life, impressive charging speed

Nay

  • Not a fan of the software
  • The macro and mono cameras are not that useful
  • Some high-end phones actually priced around the same
