The HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) was launched a few months ago, which is the company’s latest mid-range tablet. Being part of the Smart Office Launch products, the tablet is meant to collaborate with other products to improve your work productivity. I’ve been using the tablet for a few weeks, it’s time to find out whether it is a good companion or not.

Design
The HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) looks pretty much the same as other MatePads with a reasonable amount of bezels all around. The 8MP front-facing camera is located on top of the screen if you are holding the tablet in landscape orientation.
The back of the tablet is pretty much the same story with matte plastic finishing. The build material might not be premium, but trust me, you will find yourself using the keyboard cover most of the time, which we will get into it later.
It still has the same good speaker system that sounds better than many laptops on the market. You get four speakers (two on each side) that are tuned by Harman Kardon. Nope, there’s still no 3.5mm audio jack, guess we won’t be seeing that anymore.
Display
The HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) sports a 10.4-inch 2K (2,000 x 1,200) IPS FullView display. Duly note that it is not exactly a 2K QHD display since the resolution is only 2,000 x 1,200, which is just a tiny little bit more than the Full HD resolution. The screen quality is decent, but don’t get your hopes high for color-accurate work.
Performance
Powering the tablet is a Kirin 710A processor, which is a four-year-old chipset that powers the HUAWEI Y7a. It’s actually quite unusual to see a new product using such an outdated chipset, but I guess it’s where the MatePad 10.4 cuts corners. Overall, day-to-day usage is still quite acceptable, you can use it to handle basic tasks like web browsing, Spotify-ing, and Netflix-ing. The tablet is only available in one configuration — 4GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Keyboard & Stylus
The HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) also supports a Bluetooth keyboard and M-Pencil. It is not the same Smart Magnetic Keyboard as the MatePad 11, but the overall typing experience is quite similar. However, the Bluetooth keyboard only locks into one angle, and you’ll need to power it on and charge it just like other third-party Bluetooth keyboards.
It still supports 2nd Gen HUAWEI M-Pencil with the same features, but you can’t just snap the pencil on top of the tablet to charge it. What you can do is connect the M-Pencil charger to its USB-C port and snap the pencil to the charger. Additionally, don’t expect it to have an ultra-low latency since it only has a 60Hz screen.
Software
The tablet runs on HarmonyOS 2, which is quite similar to EMUI but with more features. It still has the same iPadOS-like homescreen with two separate docks at the bottom, one has all the apps you assigned, and another one houses the recent apps.
Swiping down from the top right corner of the screen will reveal the Control Panel, while from the top left corner/middle of the screen will reveal the notification panel.
Just like the MatePad 11, you can also connect the MatePad 10.4 to a HUAWEI laptop. HUAWEI PC Manager now offers three modes that allow the HUAWEI MatePad 11 and MateBook D15 to work together — Mirror, Extend, and Collaborate.
Mirror mode allows the MatePad 10.4 to be a secondary display that mirrors the contents on the MateBook D15 screen. So now the tablet becomes a digital drawing pad with the 2nd Gen HUAWEI M-Pencil. You can also sign, add comments, and draw in the apps running on the laptop.
Extend mode basically extends the laptop screen, which actually works as a secondary display. Lastly, Collaborate mode allows you to transfer files and content between the HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 and laptop seamlessly, simply by dragging and dropping. Basically, you are using the laptop to control the MatePad 10.4.
Battery Life
The HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) packs a 7,250mAh battery that supports 22.5W Fast Charging. It took around 2 hours to charge from 15% to 100% with the included 22.5W fast charger. In terms of battery life, I was able to use the tablet for more than 2 days, mainly with Spotify, browser, and Netflix, with around 10 hours of screen-on-time.
Final Words
Retailing at RM1,299 (Wi-Fi) and RM1,599 (LTE), the HUAWEI MatePad 10.4 (2022) is actually a good media consumption tablet if you only use it for watching movies and listening to music, you’ll need to download the apps yourself though. If you happen to have a HUAWEI laptop, it is actually a plus point to improve your work productivity.
