MWC 2018: Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact Officially Announced

Sony has just announced two new smartphones at MWC 2018 — Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. Yes, it took just 6 months for the company to refresh the flagship lineup, as usual.

Sony Xperia XZ2

The Xperia XZ2 now has the “Ambient Flow” design according to the company, which has curved sides and arching backs. The fingerprint scanner has now moved to the back of the phone. The phone sports a 5.7-inch extended Full HD+ 18:9 HDR display, covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable storage.

As for its camera, the phone still has the same 19MP Motion Eye camera from the XZ1. However, the phone is now capable of recording 4K HDR video, and you can now record the 960fps super slow motion video at 1080p resolution, even better than the Galaxy S9/S9+. Selfie wise, it has a 5MP front camera.

In terms of audio performance, the Xperia XZ2 now has better stereo speakers, which are 20% louder than the XZ1. The Dynamic Vibration System analyzes audio data and lets you feel the action in your hands, bringing your movies, games, and videos to life. Sadly, the 3.5mm audio jack is now gone, just like many flagship phones nowadays.

Juicing up the device is a 3,180mAh battery, which also supports Quick Charge 3.0 and Qi wireless charging. Last but not least, the phone is also IP65/68 certified to withstand splashes and spills. The phone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo and will be available in four colors: Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

Just like the past, Sony has also announced the compact performance beast — Xperia XZ2 Compact, in this case. The Xperia XZ2 Compact packs almost the same specs as the XZ2, except it has a smaller 5-inch extended Full HD+ 18:9 HDR display and 2,870mAh battery. That’s been said, the rest of the specs are quite similar to the XZ2:

As mentioned earlier, the 3.5mm audio jack is missing on both XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. Sony has also announced the Xperia Ear Duo, a wireless “open-ear” stereo headset with “Dual Listening” experience and intelligent “Daily Assist” feature that recognizes the time, location and activities to offer relevant information throughout the day.
