Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Review

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is the company’s latest flip phone that was announced a month ago, which is also the successor of last year’s Galaxy Z Flip3. The Galaxy Z Flip3 was a prominent update over its predecessor, but this year’s model seems pretty much similar with refinements here and there. Without further ado, let’s dive into the full review of Samsung’s latest flip phone!

Unboxing

Pretty much like every other Samsung flagship phone, the Galaxy Z Flip4 comes in a thin box and it doesn’t have the charging adapter included as expected.

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip4 has a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED cover screen. My review unit is the Blue variant, all colors for this year’s model now come with matte finishing, which also has an outer Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It also features an Armor Aluminum frame to protect the Hideaway Hinge. You can flip the screen at any angle and it’ll stay there. Samsung claims that this is the most refined design yet thanks to the slimmer hinge, straightened edges, contrasting hazed back glass, and glossy metal frames.

The phone still has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with a hole-punch selfie camera. The plastic bezel for protecting the screen is now slightly thinner, just a tiny thinner which you probably won’t notice. The earpiece speaker still doubles up as a part of the stereo speakers setup. Not to forget that it also comes with an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Cover Screen

The Galaxy Z Flip4 still has a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED (260 x 512 pixel) cover screen. Double-pressing the power button will show you the camera viewfinder so that you can capture selfies with either the main or ultra-wide camera just like its predecessor. Samsung has upgraded this function, all shots taken are now no longer in 1:1 square format.

The cover screen still works like a smartwatch, you can change to different clock styles, access different widgets, and read notifications. Samsung has further enhanced its functionality by adding new widgets like Direct Dial, Calendar, and Samsung SmartThings. You can also reply to messages via a preset message template, just like your Galaxy Watch. You can also use Samsung Pay directly from the cover screen.

Display

The Galaxy Z Flip4 has the same 6.7-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. It still has the crease in the middle of the screen, which spoils the overall experience, but the screen quality is as good as ever. Overall, the screen is pretty much the same as its predecessor, which feels like glass.

Performance

Powering the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with 8GB RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. Yes, you can now go all the way up to 512GB for the Z Flip4, the 128GB option is still available though. Performance is just like many other flagship phones, but you need to expect its thermal management is not as good as theirs because of the form factor.

Software

The phone runs on One UI 4.1 on top of Android 12 and the overall experience is pretty much the same. You still get the Flex Mode feature, which automatically splits into two 4-inch screens when the device is free-standing.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 will enjoy years of security update protection and Android update to Android 16 thanks to the new Samsung software and security update policy. If you are the kind of person who doesn’t upgrade phones often, it’s something that you will enjoy.

Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip4 still has a dual-camera setup next to the Cover Screen — 12MP ultra-wide + 12MP main with Dual Pixel AF and OIS. As for taking selfies, it has a 10MP front-facing camera. Samsung has upgraded the main 12MP camera with a new sensor and 1.8µm pixels, which was previously seen on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Fold3. Theoretically, it should bring a drastic improvement in image quality compared to the dated sensor of the Z Flip3.

Image quality generally is better than its predecessor. The main camera takes great photos in broad daylight with plenty of resolved detail and low noise. The ultra-wide camera also performs quite similarly to the main one, which is a pleasant surprise. Low-light photos taken with Night Mode are also better than its predecessor with more visible detail, less noise, and slightly better colors.

Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Review_22

The Galaxy Z Flip4 packs a larger 3,700mAh battery and it now supports slightly faster 25W Super Fast Charging. The battery life of last year’s model was pretty awful, I’m glad Samsung has addressed this issue and improved it. I was able to get around 4 hours of screen-on-time, sometimes 5 hours, which is around the same as the first-gen Z Flip. It’s still not impressive, but at least it’s better than before.

Final Words

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Review_23

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is available in Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, Blue, and Bespoke Edition. The Bespoke Edition now available in 28 countries worldwide, offers glass colors and frame options that provide 75 combinations to choose from, allowing customers to completely control the look of their device.

  • 128GB: RM4,099
  • 256GB: RM4,399
  • 512GB: RM4,899
  • Bespoke Edition (256GB): RM4,599

It may seem like the same phone from last year, but that’s not entirely true. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Samsung has fixed pretty much all the shortfalls on the Z Flip3 with a more refined design, improved camera, and better battery life. If durability is your concern, Samsung even offers 2 Years Warranty with Screen Coverage and 3x Protective Film Replacements for the Galaxy Z Flip4. If you are looking for a flip phone, now is the good time to get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4!
