Samsung Galaxy S24 Review

Design

Samsung Galaxy S24 Review_1

The Galaxy S24 resembles its predecessor, with Samsung making notable improvements by reducing the bezels to accommodate larger displays within the same form factor. The phone features an upgraded Armor Aluminum frame, which now has a matte finish, enhancing the device’s overall durability.

Just like the S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S24 has a slimmer bottom bezel, making it one of the narrowest bezels in the current market. I am a fan of its compact and light design, making it comfortable to hold with one hand.

Display

The Galaxy S24 sports a 6.2-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display (1Hz-120Hz), which now incorporates an LTPO panel, allowing for a variable refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, depending on the content displayed on the screen. This enhancement contributes to a more efficient and adaptive viewing experience.

It’s a huge improvement when even the base model of the S24 lineup comes with an LTPO panel. Nope, the S24 screen is not protected by Corning Gorilla Armor, which also means it doesn’t reduce reflectance as much as the S24 Ultra. Nevertheless, this is still a top-class display with vibrant and vivid colors, and the screen’s vividness has been improved thanks to the latest software update.

Performance

Unlike the S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S24 is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 processor with 8GB RAM and up to 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. The base model with 128GB UFS 3.1 storage is not available in Malaysia, who knows it might be available in the future. In terms of performance, I find that the Exynos 2400 processor performs quite well, though I still prefer the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI

Once again, the main highlight of the Galaxy S24 lineup is Galaxy AI, which we already covered in the S24 Ultra review here. All features are the same, you still get Circle to Search with Google, Interpreter, Call Assist, Writing Assist, etc.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S24 Review_6

The Galaxy S24 packs the same camera setup as its predecessor — 12MP ultra-wide + 50MP main with OIS + 10MP 3x telephoto with OIS. Additionally, there’s also a 12MP front-facing camera with autofocus for taking selfies.

Image quality generally is impressive with daylight photos having vibrant colors and great dynamic range. It’s hard to find any faults as the three cameras look consistent, though it’s a little bit disappointing that the ultra-wide camera still doesn’t have autofocus. The S24 also produces good low-light images. However, Night mode will boost the shadows and highlight bright point sources, both the grain and the fine detail are replaced with slightly broader strokes and flattened textures.

Battery Life

The Galaxy S24 packs a larger 4,000mAh battery compared to its predecessor (S23 3,900mAh) with the same 25W wired fast charging. Combined with the LTPO panel, the battery life is better than before. I was able to get to the end of the day with 60% battery left on a normal working day. It’s not as long-lasting as the S24 Ultra, but it is still good for a small phone like this.

Final Words

Samsung Galaxy S24 Review_11

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is now available in four colors — Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow. There are also three Samsung.com exclusive colors — Jade Green, Sandstone Orange, and Sapphire Blue. Pricing as below:

  • 512GB: RM4,599
  • 256GB: RM4,099

It is hard to find a compact flagship smartphone nowadays. Last year’s Galaxy S23 was already a good deal, but Samsung has improved the S24 with seven years of software updates, a new LTPO display, a slightly bigger battery, and a newer chipset.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S24 emerges as a formidable contender in the flagship smartphone market, offering a compelling blend of style, performance, and innovation. With its many features and seamless user experience, the S24 undoubtedly raises the bar for what a smartphone can achieve.

Yay

  • LTPO display with slimmer bezels
  • Top-notch performance
  • Solid camera performance

Nay

  • Similar hardware compared to its predecessor
  • Still 25W charging
