Apple Introduces iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

Besides Pro models, Apple also introduced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Both phones are powered by a 3nm A18 chipset designed for the computational demands of Apple Intelligence.

Both phones have the same screen as their predecessors—6.1-inch for the iPhone 16 and 6.7-inch for the iPhone 16 Plus. Both still have a 60Hz refresh rate and can go from as high as 2,000 nits in the sun to as low as 1 nit in the dark. Like the Pro models, both phones now come with tougher Ceramic Shield protection.

The new A18 CPU is 30% faster than the iPhone 15 CPU and 60% faster than the iPhone 12 CPU. The GPU is 40% faster than the iPhone 15 and twice as fast as the iPhone 12. Focusing on comparing just the iPhone 16 and 15, the 2024 phone can offer the same CPU performance while using 30% less power and the same GPU performance while using 35% less power. Apple also improved the system memory bandwidth by 17%.

Both phones also come with Camera Control, a tactile switch with a high-precision force sensor that enables the light press gesture, and a capacitive sensor for touch and slide interactions. You can use it to adjust zoom, exposure, and depth of field in the camera app, and “later this fall” you’ll also get a two-stage shutter function. Developers will be able to use this in their apps too.

As for the cameras, both phones still have the same 48MP main camera with sensor-shift OIS. What has changed is you now get an intermediate mode that captures 24MP photos – they offer more detail than 12MP shots combined with smaller file sizes than 48MP images. There’s also a new 12MP Ultra Wide camera, which is the one from last year’s Pro models. It has autofocus, which enables a macro mode.

The Action Button has also made its debut on the non-Pro models, which means it’s time to say goodbye to the Alert Slider. It works just like the Pro models, you can start a voice memo recording, identify a song, launch a voice translator, turn on the flashlight, and more.

Apple Intelligence is the key highlight feature on the iPhone 16 duo as well, which will arrive as a free software update next month with the first set of features in US English in “most regions around the world”. This includes Writing Tools, recording, transcribing and summarizing audio, summarized notifications, Priority Messages in Mail, email summaries, redesigned Siri with richer understanding capabilities, and typing to Siri.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus frames are made from aerospace-grade aluminum (85% recycled material in the enclosure). Both will be available in five bold colors: black, white, pink, teal, and ultramarine. You can pre-order them on Apple Malaysia’s official website starting at 8:00 PM on Friday, 13 September ahead of the actual rollout on 20 September:
