Apple Unveils iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

Apple finally unveiled the new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which are available in two sizes — 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch. Both phones now come with the latest-generation Ceramic Shield which is claimed to be twice as tough as glass on any other smartphone.

Powering the latest Pro models is the new A18 Pro chip, which Apple promises to have up to 20% better-sustained performance on these phones compared to their predecessors thanks to improvements in heat dissipation and efficiency. The A18 Pro is built on a 3nm process and has a new 16-core Neural Engine. There’s a 17% increase in total system memory bandwidth, which also benefits the 6-core GPU which is up to 20% faster than the previous generation.

The new iPhone 16 Pro series comes with Camera Control, a tactile switch with a high-precision force sensor that enables the light press gesture, and a capacitive sensor that allows for touch and slide interactions. You can use it to adjust zoom, exposure, and depth of field in the camera app, and “later this fall” you’ll also get a two-stage shutter function. Developers will be able to use this in their apps too.

There’s a new 48MP Fusion camera with a faster, more efficient quad-pixel sensor and Apple Camera Interface, unlocking 4K120 fps video recording in Dolby Vision. The quad-pixel sensor can read data 2x faster, enabling zero shutter lag for 48MP ProRAW or HEIF photos. A new 48MP Ultra Wide camera also features a quad-pixel sensor with autofocus. Furthermore, the 5x telephoto camera is now also available on the smaller Pro model.

Another highlight is Apple Intelligence, which will arrive as a free software update next month with the first set of features in US English in “most regions around the world”. This includes Writing Tools, recording, transcribing and summarizing audio, summarized notifications, Priority Messages in Mail, email summaries, redesigned Siri with richer understanding capabilities, and typing to Siri.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available in four stunning finishes: black titanium, natural titanium, white titanium, and desert titanium. You can pre-order them on Apple Malaysia’s official website starting at 8:00 PM on Friday, 13 September ahead of the actual rollout on 20 September:

Surprisingly, the starting prices for both variants are actually lower than their predecessors, which are RM5,499 and RM6,499, respectively.
