Unboxing & First Look: Xiaomi Mi MIX 3

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 Unboxing & First Look_Cover Photo

Introduction

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 was announced a month ago, and recently we got a chance to try out the phone for a short while. Here comes the unboxing and first look of the Mi MIX 3, the latest near bezel-less smartphone by Xiaomi. Before we proceed, duly note that this is a China unit, there might be some changes in the future when we get our review unit with global software.

Unboxing

The Mi MIX 3 comes in a black square box with the naming debossed in gold. Opening up the box you’ll first see the greeting message by Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi. The box contains:

Surprisingly, there’s actually a wireless charging pad included in the box, which also supports charging other Qi-enabled devices.

First Look

The whole idea of the Mi MIX series is basically all about its near bezel-less display, and every year the screen is getting bigger and bigger, but the body is getting smaller and smaller. The Mi MIX 3 sports a 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 93.4% screen-to-body ratio.

Like its predecessor, it has a tiny bezel on top and both sides of the screen. The bottom chin is thinner than before, but still not the thinnest we’ve seen on a smartphone.

You might notice that there’s no front-facing camera below the screen like its predecessor. This is because Xiaomi has found a new solution for placing the front-facing cameras. Yup, it has two front cameras — a 24MP Sony IMX576 1.8μm primary sensor + a 2MP 1.75μm secondary sensor.

Back to the main topic, the phone actually uses a magnetic slider to reveal the 24MP + 2MP front cameras when sliding out. This is actually a pretty neat idea, not the first time I saw, but definitely, a good way to get rid of the notch. Additionally, the phone will actually remind you to push the screen down to open camera if you want to take a selfie but didn’t slide down the screen. Sliding down the screen when the screen is on will actually jump straight to the front-facing camera.

It still has the same ceramic back, which is lighter than glass and can cope with higher temperature. The unit we are having is actually the Jade Green variant, which has a high chance that the company is bringing in to Malaysia.

There’s a dual-camera setup on the back — 12MP Sony IMX363 1.4μm + 12MP Samsung S5K3M3+ 1.0μm. The fingerprint sensor is also located on the back, sadly no in-display fingerprint sensor this time around.

Like most flagships in 2018, the Mi MIX 3 doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio jack. Its USB-C port supports Quick Charge 4+ to charge up the 3,200mAh battery in rapid time.

The phone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with up to 10GB RAM and 256GB non-expandable storage. It runs on MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie, but no point for us to try out since it’s a Chinese version and doesn’t come with Google Play services.

Pricing & Availability

At the moment, the pricing and availability of the Mi MIX 3 remain unknown. However, we heard that the phone is likely to arrive Malaysia next month or January 2019. Stay tuned as we will conduct a full review once we got the global unit.
