IFA 2015: Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium announced

Sony has unveiled the Xperia Z5 series at IFA 2015 – Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium.

These three smartphones are targeting for different markets. The Xperia Z5 is a regular flagship from the company, while the Z5 Compact is more on flagship specs in small size. As for the Z5 Premium, it is the world’s first smartphone with 4K display.

The Xperia Z5 comes with a 5.2″ Full HD TRILUMINOS display with the pixel density of 428 ppi. The device is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3 GB of RAM. Its 32 GB internal storage is expandable via MicroSD card up to 200 GB.

For the first time since the Xperia Z1, Sony has finally upgraded the Z5 camera to a 23 MP unit, which uses custom-made sensor. The new camera allows you to take 23 MP images in 4:3 aspect or 20 MP in 16:9, even in Superior Auto mode. There’s a 5 MP camera at the front too.

At just 7.3 mm thick, Sony has redesigned the power button, now doubling as a fingerprint sensor. Like its predecessor, the Z5 is also IP65 and IP68 water and dust resistance. The 2,900 mAh battery is said to have up to 2 days battery life.

The Sony Xperia Z5 is running on Android 5.1 Lollipop and it comes with single and dual SIM versions, which will be available in certain regions.

The Xperia Z5 Compact is a scale down version of its bigger brother. It has a smaller 4.6″ HD TRILUMINOS display and the RAM is only 2 GB.

The rest of the specs are pretty similar – Snapdragon 810 SoC, 32 GB expandable storage, 23 MP rear camera, 5 MP front camera, IP65/68 certification and side-mounted power button doubling as a fingerprint sensor.

As the size is smaller, the Z5 Compact only comes with a slightly smaller 2,700 mAh battery which also provides up to 2 days battery life.

The Xperia Z5 Premium, is basically the bigger version of the regular Z5 with a 5.5″ 4K TRILUMINOS display. Yes! It is the world’s first smartphone to feature a 4K display.

Besides the display, nothing has changed on the specs. The Z5 Premium still has the same Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB expandable storage, 23 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras, IP65/68 certification, Android 5.1 Lollipop and side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Battery may be the main concern on the Xperia Z5 Premium as the 3,430 mAh battery seems challenging to power up the 4K display. It supports quick charging by the way.

The Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will launch globally from October, while the Z5 Premium will launch from November.
