Sony α7 III Officially Announced with New Imaging Technologies

A few months ago, Sony announced the α7R III, which also means that we might be seeing a new α7 and α7S soon. Well, the Sony α7 III has been officially announced, featuring a brand new 24.2MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with increased sensitivity, outstanding resolution and an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities.

In case you didn’t know about the α7 series, it is actually a range of full-frame mirrorless cameras. The AF performance of the α7 III has been largely improved over the α7 II. It now comes with the 4D FOCUS capabilities, which has 425 contrast AF points that work with a 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system. That’s been said, the AF system now covers approximately 93% of the frame.

Additionally, the AF response and tracking are now with almost 2 times faster the focusing speed in low-light condition and 2 times faster the tracking speed compared to the previous model. There’s also the Eye AF feature which works even in AF-C mode. The α7 III now also comes with a “joystick” for moving focus points quickly.
With an updated image processing system, the α7 III is now capable of shooting full resolution images at up to 10fps continuous, accurate AF/AE tracking for up to 177 Standard JPEG images, 89 compressed RAW images or 40 uncompressed RAW images. The camera can also shoot continuously at up to 8 fps in live view mode with minimal lag in the viewfinder or LCD screen.

Furthermore, the camera can also record 4K videos without pixel binning to collect about 2.4x the amount of data required for 4K movies, and then oversamples it to produce high-quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. It also features HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, which supports an Instant HDR workflow. S-Log2 and S-Log3 are also available for increased color grading flexibility, as well as Zebra functionality.
