Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Review

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip6 last month at its latest Unpacked event, the successor to last year’s Z Flip5. I’ve been using the phone for over a couple of weeks, and here’s the full review.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Specs

Design

My first-look article covered most of the phone’s design, but there are some minor details that I’m pretty impressed with. It still has the same 3.4-inch Super AMOLED 60Hz Flex Window cover screen. The phone features a bold camera ring design that follows the phone’s back color, available in Blue, Yellow, Silver Shadow, and Mint.

The phone still features the same dual-rail hinge, enhanced armor aluminum, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and a protective layer. It now comes with an IP48 rating for water and dust resistance, previous models only support an IPX8 rating.

One minor change is the return of a matte finish for the back glass material and the frame. Samsung also removed its brand logo on the back panel, meaning you can only see the branding when you close the screen since the Samsung logo is now on the hinge cover.

Display

The phone has the same 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which is still a top-class display with vibrant and vivid colors. One noticeable difference is the crease now feels flatter when I’m scrolling my finger around, which makes the overall experience more pleasant.

The Flex Window on the front has now been enhanced, offering interactive and generative wallpapers, suggested replies, an interpreter with conversation mode, more widgets, and the ability to display multiple widgets and apps on a single screen.

Performance

Powering the Galaxy Z Flip6 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Galaxy with 12GB RAM and two storage options — 256GB and 512GB. Yup, Samsung has upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 12GB which will be better in terms of multitasking and overall performance.

The Galaxy Z Flip6 is the first in the Z Flip series to feature a vapor chamber. Vapor chambers diffuse heat to prevent smartphones from overheating. The larger the vapor chamber, the more effectively it can dissipate heat and allow devices to maintain stable performance. Samsung managed to include a large vapor chamber in the foldable.

Software

The Galaxy Z Flip6 runs on One UI 6.1.1 on top of Android 14 and it still comes with Galaxy AI, you can read more about it in my Galaxy S24 Ultra review here. On top of that, Samsung also further enhanced the Galaxy AI in One UI 6.1.1.

Exclusively available for the Galaxy Z series, Interpreter now comes with a new conversation mode that enables both parties to conveniently view translations on the main and cover screens for more natural interactions. It also offers one-way translation, so you can easily understand when listening during lectures or any other type of presentation. Live Translate, which translates phone calls directly on your device in real-time, is also now being extended beyond Samsung’s own native calling app to a selection of popular third-party apps.

The advanced editing experience with Photo Assist on the screen helps to effortlessly create professional-grade content. Portrait Studio creates a variety of different portrait styles such as 3D cartoon or watercolor for more creative possibilities. It also comes with Drawing Assist, which transforms your simple drawings into captivating works of art. Other new features include Transcript Assist in Notes, Chat Assist with Composer, and Circle to Search for solving math problems.

Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip6 now features a 50MP main camera with OIS and Auto Zoom, accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide camera. It has the same 10MP front-facing camera for taking selfies. The phone also has a camcorder mode that provides you smooth zooming experience while recording videos.

Image quality generally is impressive with daylight photos having vibrant colors and great dynamic range. It’s hard to find any faults as the two cameras look consistent, though it’s a little bit disappointing that the ultra-wide camera still doesn’t have autofocus. The phone also produces good low-light images. However, Night mode will boost the shadows and highlight bright point sources, both the grain and the fine detail are replaced with slightly broader strokes and flattened textures.

Battery Life

The Galaxy Z Flip6 now packs a larger 4,000mAh battery compared to its predecessor (Z Flip5 3,700mAh) with the same 25W wired fast charging. I was able to get to the end of the day with 60% battery left on a normal working day. The battery life is better than its predecessor and it also supports the battery bypass feature while gaming to preserve the battery lifespan.

Final Words

Available in Blue, Yellow, Silver Shadow, Mint, and three Samsung.com Exclusive colors — Crafted Black, White, and Peach, the Galaxy Z Flip6 is now available in Malaysia.

The Z Flip5 was the best flip phone in my opinion, but the Z Flip6 brings it to the next level. You now get a vapor chamber for better heat dissipation together with the latest flagship processor, the enhanced Galaxy AI that has more new features, a 50MP main camera that shoots better photos, and also a larger 4,000mAh battery that lasts longer. Samsung just improved every aspect of the phone, yet keeping the phone at the same thickness and weight. This is for sure the new best flip phone in the universe!
