Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Review

A few weeks ago, we gave the Galaxy A54 our first impressions, which is the company’s latest mid-range phone targeting the Gen Z market. I’ve been using the phone for a couple of weeks, and it’s time for the full review.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Specs

Design

The front of the Galaxy A54 is all about the 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster. It’s a flat screen with thick bezels around it. The phone also has an optical in-display fingerprint sensor, which is still reasonably fast.

Unlike the polished aluminum frame on the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy A54 has an unpolished aluminum frame, but I actually prefer it since it doesn’t attract fingerprints.

Surprisingly, Samsung has swapped the plastic back to Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for this generation, which feels more premium than before. However, it has a glossy back that is prone to attracting visible fingerprints, but it’s harder to notice fingerprints on this Awesome White variant. It also has the same three-camera design as the Galaxy S23 series.

Display

The Galaxy A54 sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster. It has the best-in-class display with vivid colors. Outdoor visibility is pretty great, even under bright sunlight. Obviously, there are still certain features lacking compared to the flagship Galaxy S23 series, but I would say it is more than enough for most consumers.

Performance

Powering the Galaxy A54 is the company’s latest Exynos 1380 processor with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The overall experience is quite smooth, but playing high-end games like Genshin Impact will definitely need to tune down the graphics settings.

Software

The Galaxy A54 runs on One UI 5.1 on top of Android 13 with a guarantee of up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The overall software experience is rather similar to the flagship Galaxy S23 series.

The phone also gets the same high-end feature from the Galaxy S23 series — Object Eraser. This feature allows you to remove unwanted objects from your photos.

Camera

In terms of cameras, it has a triple-camera setup on the back — 50MP main with OIS + 12MP ultra-wide + 5MP macro. Yup, the macro camera basically is there to make up the numbers, since the Galaxy S23 also has three cameras on the back. The phone also has a 32MP front camera for taking selfies.

Image quality generally is pretty good, I believe Samsung has opted for the same main camera as the Galaxy S23. The phone captures excellent daylight photos with a wide dynamic range. Low-light photos captured with the main camera look great with well-balanced exposures and excellent detail. The ultra-wide camera, however, took average low-light photos with washed-out colors.

Battery Life

The Galaxy A54 packs the same 5,000mAh battery as its predecessor, and it still supports 25W fast charging. Unfortunately, despite having a glass back body, the phone doesn’t support wireless charging. I was able to get 2 days of battery life with more than 7 hours of screen-on-time easily. Charging the phone from 15% to full took me around an hour.

Final Words

Retailing at RM1,899, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is pretty much 80% of a flagship phone for around a third of the price. My verdict is pretty much the same as last year — it still has a few best-in-class features — the screen, camera, and battery life, but Samsung has also improved the design and build quality with a sleek frame and clean camera layout. The Galaxy A54 is the best phone priced below RM2k that has a top-class display and an impressive camera.
