Introduction
This is the Samsung Galaxy A02s, the company’s latest entry-level smartphone that pretty much does what you need. Well, this isn’t a mid-range or high-end smartphone that we used to review, but if you are looking for a budget smartphone, you’ve come to the right place. Design
The front of the Samsung Galaxy A02s looks pretty much like many affordable smartphones nowadays. It has reasonable thick bezels and a waterdrop notch, Samsung calls it the Infinity-V display.
Just like the old Samsung Galaxy smartphones, the frame and the back of the phone are made of plastic. The back has a streamlined design with lines that creates a nice texture. The phone is available in three colors — Blue, Black, and White.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy A02s sports a 6.5-inch HD+ PLS LCD display. Not an AMOLED display like most Samsung smartphones available in the market. In case you didn’t know, Samsung had launched more phones with an AMOLED panel than an LCD panel. After using many smartphones with at least Full HD resolution, it takes some time to get used to the HD+ resolution. The screen is mediocre with okay colors, and it does have a motion blur issue when scrolling the screen.
Performance
Powering the Samsung Galaxy A02s is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable storage. Everything performs quite okay, but don’t expect it to be snappy fast. There’s a slight delay when I press a button, which is kinda expected. The phone only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection, so you won’t be able to enjoy a fast connection like on 5GHz Wi-Fi.
Software
The phone runs on One UI Core version 2.5 on top of Android 10. It looks and feels like One UI, but there are some One UI features missing, such as Edge Panel and Samsung Pay. The phone doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor, and its face recognition feature works well but not the safest, guess password unlock is the safest.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy A02s has a triple-camera setup on the back — 2MP depth + 13MP main + 2MP macro. Basically, only the 13MP main camera is useful. It has a 5MP front camera for taking selfies.
Battery Life
The phone has a 5,000mAh battery and it supports 15W charging. It can last through a day or two easily, though getting it to fully charge from 15% will take around 3 hours, quite slow for phones nowadays.
Final Words
Retailing at RM529, the Samsung Galaxy A02s is slightly more expensive than its competitors, some even offer better performance. However, keep in mind that you get what you pay for. True, its rivals might offer better performance at a lower price, but none of them has a good software experience like Samsung’s One UI. The performance deficit is actually quite minimal and if you look carefully, some sellers are selling the phone even at a lower price. At the end of the day, it depends on what you need when getting a smartphone.
