Introduction
This is OPPO Reno6 Z, one of the Reno6 series devices that are coming to Malaysia, or perhaps already available in Malaysia, depending on when you read this review. I’ve been using the phone for a couple of weeks, and here’s the full review!

Design
On paper, the OPPO Reno6 Z might be actually quite a similar phone as the Reno5 F, which I reviewed not long ago. However, the phone actually looks more like the Reno5 in terms of design. Similar to the Reno5, the front of the phone looks quite ordinary. There’s a 32MP hole-punch selfie camera on the top left corner of the screen and the bezel below the screen is pretty thick.
The power button, volume rocker, SIM slot, 3.5mm audio jack, USB-C port, are all located at the same position as the Reno5. The only difference is that the power button now doesn’t have a green line on it, but you don’t really need it anyway.
The back is pretty much the same story as well — the Reno6 Z has the Reno Glow finish, which looks and feels pretty unique. My review unit is the Aurora variant, which reflects different shades of blues and greens, just like the aurora effect.
The camera housing of the Reno6 Z is a little bit different from the Reno5. Personally, I would prefer the glass housing on the Reno5, but glass is easier to break than the metal housing on the Reno6 Z.
Display
In terms of display, the OPPO Reno6 Z is pretty much the same story as the Reno5 F. It sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ 60Hz AMOLED display. As I mentioned before, I would prefer a 60Hz AMOLED panel, over an LCD panel with a higher refresh rate. Since it has an AMOLED panel, OPPO was able to put an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Performance
The OPPO Reno6 Z is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 800U processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. In terms of performance, the MediaTek Dimensity 800U is quite on par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G. The phone performs quite well on daily basis and it handles light games like Alto’s Adventure pretty well. When it comes to graphics-intensive games, you’ll need to tune down the settings. It also has a RAM disk feature where a certain amount of internal storage is allocated to be treated as “RAM”.
Software
The OPPO Reno6 Z runs on ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. The overall experience is pretty similar, you get all the same features such as Personalizations, OPPO Relax app, FlexDrop, and the Game Space app.
There are a few new features though, the Reno6 Z now supports Air Gestures. Basically, all you need to do is just holding your hand 20-40cm from the phone screen and wait for the hand icon to appear, then perform certain gestures to perform certain functions. I find this feature isn’t that practical as it takes a long time for the phone to recognize and respond.
The AI intelligent sensing algorithm also can automatically detect if someone else is peeking at the user’s phone. The detailed content of the pop-up notification will be hidden to prevent others from spying during a busy commute or a meeting.
The Reno6 Z is also equipped with an AI intelligent sensing algorithm that detects your present attention, make sure the screen would not dim or go to sleep when you are watching the phone.
Camera
In terms of camera, the Reno6 Z packs a triple-camera on the back — 64MP main + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP macro. The phone comes with lots of AI Portrait features for stills and videos such as the Portrait Beautification, Bokeh Flare Portrait, AI Color Portrait, and more. It also has the same AI Palette feature from the Find X3 Pro, which lets you easily copy your favorite portrait styles onto your photos with a single click, giving you absolute creative control over your own images. As for taking selfies, the phone still has the same 32MP front-facing camera.

Night Mode
Image quality generally is pretty much the same as the Reno5. The ultra-wide photos tend to have a softer detail and warmer white balance. When turned on the AI scene enhancement feature, photos are more vibrant and eye-pleasing, but sometimes it’ll be over-enhanced. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test out more about the camera due to the ongoing pandemic. Everyone needs to stay safe and stay at home! Click here to view all the camera samples.
Battery Life
Just like the Reno5 F, the OPPO Reno6 Z packs a 4,310mAh battery and it supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0. Based on my usage, I was able to get around 5 hours of screen-on-time, that’s two hours short of the Reno5 F, perhaps the Dimensity 800U chipset is less efficient. Nevertheless, the phone is able to last up to two days if you are not a heavy user.
Final Words
The OPPO Reno6 Z is pretty much like the hybrid of Reno5 and Reno5 F. You can almost the same outlook as the Reno5, but with the internal of Reno5 F (except for the chipset and main camera). Basically, this is a more beautiful variant of the Reno5 F with some upgrades here and there. So, just get this phone if you are planning to get the Reno5 F or a phone around the same range. I doubt that there is any other phone like the Reno6 Z to have a nice design, impressive display, and good camera with rich features.
The phone is launching in Malaysia on August 5th alongside Reno6, and the price remains unknown. The phone is now available for advanced pre-order though, free gifts worth RM779 are up for grabs for advanced pre-orders made from 28th July till 4th August 2021.
