OPPO Reno5 F Review

Introduction

Earlier this year, I reviewed the OPPO Reno5, a good phone with a beautiful design, great display, satisfying performance, decent camera, and good battery life. Fast forward to April, the OPPO Reno5 F was officially launched in Malaysia. I’ve been using the phone for quite some time now, and it’s time for the full review!

OPPO Reno5 F Specs

Design

The front of the OPPO Reno5 F looks quite similar to the Reno5. It has a 32MP hole-punch front-facing camera at the top left corner. As usual, the phone has a thick chin at the bottom.

Similar to the Reno5, the power button is located on the right side, while the left side has the SIM slot and volume rocker. At the bottom, it has a 3.5mm audio jack, USB-C port, and a mono speaker grille.

The back of the phone is pretty common, which has a gradient of black, not the same unique look as the Reno5. My review unit is the Fluid Black variant, pretty easy to see the fingerprints.

Display

The OPPO Reno5 F sports a 6.43-inch Full HD+ 60Hz AMOLED display. Yup, it doesn’t have a 90Hz refresh rate like the Reno5, but at least it has an AMOLED panel. Not sure whether it’s the same one as the Reno5, but I notice that the Reno5 F screen is less saturated compared to the Reno5’s.

Performance

Powering the OPPO Reno5 F is a MediaTek Helio P95 processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. For sure the performance won’t be as good as the Snapdragon 765G on the Reno5, but it’ll get the job done with slight delays here and there. In terms of gaming performance, most graphic demanding games can be played at an acceptable frame rate in medium settings.

Software

The OPPO Reno5 F runs on ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. It has the same software experience as the Reno5, which means you get all the same features such as Personalizations, OPPO Relax app, FlexDrop, and the Game Space app.

Camera

The OPPO Reno5 F packs a quad-camera setup on the back — 48MP main + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth + 2MP monochrome sensor. Basically, it’s the same camera setup as the Reno5, but the main camera is now a 48MP sensor.

AI Color Portrait

Night Mode

Image quality generally is quite similar to the Reno5, but the Reno5 F now has the AI Color Portrait feature that intelligently highlights your subject’s natural colors while turning the background black and white. Photos taken with the ultra-wide camera tend to have a softer detail and warmer white balance. Click here to view all the camera samples.

Battery Life

The OPPO Reno5 F packs a 4,310mAh battery and it supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0. It’s not the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 like you found on the Reno5, which means you won’t get the fast 35 minutes to full charging speed. Based on my test, charging this phone from 15% to full took around 80 minutes. In terms of battery life, the phone can last through a day or two with more than 7 hours of battery life. That’s better than the Reno5 as it has a 60Hz refresh rate, less powerful processor, and slightly bigger battery.

Final Words

Retailing at RM1,199, the OPPO Reno5 F is a toned-down version of the Reno5 with a common design, lower screen refresh rate, and less powerful performance. If you think that the Reno5 is out of budget, this is actually a good choice, but you will need to settle with the slower performance. I personally think that the cameras are the same. In fact, the Reno5 F actually has more features!
