OPPO A73 Review

Introduction

This is the OPPO A73, OPPO’s latest mid-range device that was made available earlier this month. The A73 is positioned below the A93, which we reviewed last month.

OPPO A73 Specs

Design

Unlike the A93, the OPPO A73 has a boxy design, kinda reminiscing the OPPO R5 design language. The phone has a water-drop notch to host its front-facing camera.

The phone has a plastic back, but with a unique touch on it. The plastic back has a leather-like texture on it, which feels like leather, but definitely, you can feel that it’s different from the real leather.

The phone measures at only 7.45mm thin, its bottom houses a 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, USB-C port, and the mono down-firing speaker. The phone supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0, hence it’s normal to have a USB-C port.

Display

The OPPO A73 sports a 6.44-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90.7% screen-to-body ratio. It’s good that OPPO has opted for an AMOLED panel, which is also why the A73 comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor. It has the best display in its class, nothing much to complain about since I personally prefer a 60Hz AMOLED display over a 120Hz LCD display.

Performance

Powering the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 662 SoC performs quite similar to the Snapdragon 665 SoC since both are actually quite similar. In certain situations, the Snapdragon 665 SoC actually outperforms the Snapdragon 662 SoC. Don’t expect it to perform well on gaming, but it is able to get some simple tasks done. However, the Snapdragon 662 processor is lacking behind compared with other rivals using different processors within a similar price range.

Software

The phone runs on ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10. The overall experience is quite similar to the A93, you can check out the review here. The overall experience is better than before, and those pre-installed apps can be uninstalled via App Market.

Camera

The phone has a quad-camera setup on the back — 16MP main + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth + 2MP mono. Nope, it doesn’t come with a list of AI Portrait features, just some basic ones.

Ultra-Wide
16MP Main
Night Mode

Image quality generally is quite decent in broad daylight. The main camera shot great dynamic range photos, while the ultra-wide camera shot less saturated photos with softer details. Night mode performance is quite average, but it’s kinda useless for the ultra-wide lens. Click here for all the camera samples.

Battery Life

The A73 packs a 4,015mAh battery that also supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0. It has a pretty impressive battery life! I was able to get more than 6 hours of screen-on-time and it’s possible to charge this phone once in two days. As for the charging speed, it’ll take around an hour to charge the phone from 15% to full.

Final Words

Retailing at RM899, the OPPO A73 is available in two colors — Navy Blue and Dynamic Orange. At this price tag, you can actually get a phone with better performance, but not all mid-rangers have a nice display and impressive battery life like the A73. If you spend most of your time on your phone watching videos, the OPPO A73’s great display and long-lasting battery life are your deciding factors.
