HONOR X9c Review

The HONOR X9c is the successor to last year’s X9b, which is here to take over and become the company’s toughest smartphone ever. I’ve been using the phone for the past couple of weeks and here’s the full review.

HONOR X9c Specs

Design

The HONOR X9c resembles its predecessor, but the phone is now more durable with Ultra-tough Triple Defense: Drop Resistance, 360° Water Resistance, and Scratch Resistance. If you think the X9b has reached the peak of durability, the new X9c elevates this resilience to a new level, boasting an industry-leading anti-fall capability to drop from heights up to 2
meters. This is all thanks to the Anti-drop 3.0 technology, which allows the device to withstand complex surfaces in drop resistance.

Its comprehensive reliability is significantly enhanced by 166%, enabling it to withstand fall impact from hard surfaces
like marble, cobblestone, asphalt, tactile paving stone, or bluestone.

Accompanied by the industry’s first Fully Wrapped Curved Screen Protection Layer and industry’s first Cushioning Airbag Protective Case (2nd Generation Cushioning Structure), which features micro-level gaps that allow the case to deform upon impact, effectively absorbing energy and significantly minimizing the risk of cracked screens and other damage, these elements work together to reduce damage from impacts and scratches.

Certified with an IP65M rating for water and dust resistance, it not only withstands splashes but has also been rigorously tested to function even after being submerged in 25cm depth water for up to 5 minutes. Moreover, the device supports wet hand touch control, enabling seamless interaction even when users’ hands are wet or greasy.

Display

The HONOR X9c sports a 6.78-inch (2,700 x 1,224) 120Hz AMOLED display. The screen is pretty smooth with good deep rich colors, but I still encounter the same issue on certain occasions scrolling doesn’t feel that smooth at all especially when I’m scrolling the YouTube app.

Performance

Powering the HONOR X9c is still the same 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. In terms of performance, the phone performs quite well for basic tasks such as replying to messages, web browsing, and playing light games. It’s not the most powerful chipset out there but it runs everything smoothly.

Software

The phone runs on MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14, which has quite a similar user experience as the HONOR 200 Pro that we reviewed a few months ago. It comes with HONOR AI features such as AI Eraser, AI Motion Sensing, Magic Capsule, Magic Portal, and Parallel Space.

Camera

The HONOR X9c comes with a dual-camera setup — 5MP ultra-wide + 108MP main with OIS. Yes, the main camera now comes with OIS that was previously not offered on HONOR X9b 5G, effectively minimizing blurring and shakiness to deliver crystal-clear images in any condition.

The 5MP ultra-wide camera is practically unusable as most photos are quite blurry or noisy, you can’t use night mode on the ultra-wide camera too. As for the 108MP main camera, it has a mediocre performance. The colors are dull with not much dynamic range, just don’t expect it to capture nice photos.

Battery Life

The phone has an even larger 6,600mAh silicon carbon battery that also supports 66W HONOR SuperCharge. I was able to get two days of battery life easily on normal usage, the phone can even go up to three days if I barely use it with back-to-back meetings.

Final Words

Retailing at RM1,499 (256GB) and RM1,699 (512GB), the HONOR X9c no doubt is a step up from its predecessor. It is now even more durable than before and HONOR Malaysia even offers Triple Assurance as well: 365-day front & back crack replacement, 180-day one-to-one replacement, and 36-month battery assurance. At this range, this is the best you’ll get and I don’t think any other phones can match it.
