ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302) Review

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302) is the company’s latest ultrabook equipped with the latest AMD Ryzen 6000 series chip. ASUS claims that it is the world’s lightest 13.3″ 2.8K OLED laptop, and it actually looks quite similar to the Zenbook 14 OLED (UX3402) that we reviewed a few months ago. Without further ado, let’s dive into the full review of this latest AMD-powered ultrabook.

ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302) Specs

Design

It seems that ASUS has moved on from the concentric circle design on the lid for the ultrabook series. Unlike the Zenbook 14 OLED, the Zenbook S 13 OLED has a regular-sized ASUS monogram logo located off-center. The laptop is available in two color options — Ponder Blue and Refined White.

The laptop lid has a minimalist design and its chassis is made from magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis, not as durable as metal but ASUS did it just to make the laptop lighter.

For the first time, the Zenbook S 13 OLED has a 1080p webcam sitting on top of the display. In case you didn’t know, most ASUS laptops that I’ve reviewed all came with a 720p webcam. It doesn’t have a mechanical privacy shutter but you can still disable the microphone and webcam using the keyboard.

The laptop also has a 180° ErgoLift hinge so that you can just show it to the person sitting opposite easily. Since it has a smaller screen than the Zenbook 14 OLED, the Zenbook S 13 OLED is only 1.49cm thin and weighs just 1.1kg, which is pretty easy to carry around.

The laptop only features three USB-C ports and a 3.5mm audio jack. Each USB-C port supports up to 10Gb/s transfer speed for you to connect external 4K displays, storage devices, and expand connections.

The keyboard and touchpad are the same as the Zenbook 14 OLED. The new ErgoSense keyboard provides you with a comfortable typing experience with dished keycaps and a long 1.4mm key travel. The touchpad includes the NumberPad 2.0 numeric keypad, and it has a hydrophobic coating making the surface feel smoother like touching silk.

Display

The Zenbook S 13 OLED sports a 13.3″ OLED 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) 60Hz 550 nits NanoEdge 16:10 touchscreen display. It’s the same impressive display as those higher-end Zenbooks, but the only downside is it only has a 60Hz refresh rate.

Performance

Powering the Zenbook S 13 OLED is the latest AMD Ryzen 7 6800U mobile processor with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 Performance SSD. It is a 28W chip built on a TSMC 6nm FinFET architecture and the AMD Radeon 680M integrated GPU is based on RDNA 2.

The overall performance is quite impressive, but don’t expect you can play those triple-A titles at the highest graphical settings. After all, it is still an ultrabook. Just like the ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED, AMD doesn’t throttle the performance at all when using the laptop on battery. However, the battery life might be cut short to around 2 hours.

Battery Life

The Zenbook S 13 OLED packs a 67WHrs 4-cell Li-ion battery that also supports the USB-C Easy Charge feature. It comes with a 65W charger in the box, but most of the time I’ll just use my own UGREEN 100W GaN charger since you can only charge it via the USB-C port. In terms of battery life, I was able to get around 6 to 7 hours of usage with around 50% brightness.

Final Words

Retailing at RM5,999, the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED (UM5302) is the best 13-inch ultrabook you can get right now if you insist on getting a Windows laptop. What really impressed me is its performance, you don’t get compromised performance even on battery, though that will sacrifice the battery life.
