Apple unveiled the M2 chip in June of last year, which brought a performance boost compared to the original M1. Like last year, the company announced two higher-power chips — M2 Pro and M2 Max.
As usual, there are both Pro and Max models in addition to the original M2 chip. The Pro scales up the architecture of M2 to deliver an up to 12-core CPU and up to 19-core GPU, together with up to 32GB of fast unified memory. The Max builds on the capabilities of the Pro, including an up to 38-core GPU, double the unified memory bandwidth, and up to 96GB of unified memory.
Both chips use a 16-core Neural Engine capable of 15.8 TOPS, 40% faster than the previous generation. Both chips also have built-in video encode/decode engines and ProRes engines, which means the chips can handle multiple 4K and 8K video streams using ProRes, HEVC, and H.264.
The new chips are coming to the new MacBook Pro (14″ and 16″) and Mac mini. Apple claims that the new MacBook Pro using the new chips can last up to 22 hours on a single charge.
