Apple has officially unveiled the Apple TV 4K (4th generation), bringing a significant performance upgrade, enhanced smart home capabilities, and new Apple Intelligence features to its latest streaming device. However, these improvements come with a higher price tag, as the new model is priced at RM1,349 in Malaysia.

Unlike its predecessor, which was launched in 2022, the new Apple TV 4K is available in a single configuration with 128GB of storage and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity.

Under the hood, the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is powered by the Apple A19 chip, the same chipset found in the iPhone 17 series. Compared with the A15 Bionic chip used in the previous generation, the new processor delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and twice the GPU performance.

The A19 chip also features a built-in AV1 decoder, enabling support for the video codec used by modern streaming platforms. Apple has also dropped the 64GB storage option, making 128GB the standard capacity for the latest model.

Beyond streaming, the Apple TV 4K supports Apple Arcade games and Apple Fitness+ workouts. Users can also make video calls on their television through Continuity Camera, which allows a compatible iPhone to function as a webcam. Additionally, the device can display photos from an iCloud account, turning a television into a digital photo album.

The Apple TV remote retains its familiar design, but gains Find My support with Precision Finding, making it easier for users to locate a misplaced remote.

For audio, the new Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos and allows users to pair up to four HomePod speakers for a more immersive home entertainment experience. These can include the HomePod mini (2nd generation) and HomePod (2nd generation), with the front and rear speaker pairs required to use the same model.

Alternatively, users can connect up to two pairs of compatible AirPods with Spatial Audio support for private listening without disturbing others. On the video front, the device supports Dolby Vision, HDR, HDR10+ and HLG, with output resolutions of up to 4K at 60fps. It also supports 21:9 displays and projectors.

The new Apple TV 4K also doubles as a smart home hub, allowing users to control compatible smart home devices directly from their television. It supports Wi-Fi and Thread connectivity, while compatible video doorbells can display a live feed on the screen when someone rings the doorbell. Users can also communicate with visitors and unlock the door when a compatible smart lock is installed.

Apple Intelligence introduces further smart home capabilities, particularly for security cameras. The system can analyse camera feeds, generate descriptions of detected activity and deliver summarised notifications when movement or other activity is detected. The A19 chip incorporates Secure Exclaves, which provide isolated environments for processing sensitive data. Apple Intelligence and the upgraded Siri experience use a combination of on-device processing and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute to support these features while protecting user privacy.

For hands-free control, the Apple TV 4K comes with three far-field microphones, allowing users to activate Siri with the “Hey Siri” wake phrase from across the room. Siri can be used to control playback and manage compatible smart home devices.
