Apple has introduced updated versions of its Mac Studio, now featuring the M4 Max and the all-new M3 Ultra chips. Designed for video editors, developers, engineers, photographers, and creative professionals, the latest Mac desktop promises significant performance improvements.
Originally launched in 2022 with the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips, the Mac Studio has been upgraded to deliver substantial gains in 3D rendering, video editing, code compiling, and other demanding workflows.
The base model of the Mac Studio comes equipped with the M4 Max chip, offering a configurable 14-16-core CPU, 32-40-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. It includes 36GB of unified memory as standard, expandable up to 128GB with a bandwidth of 546GB/s. Storage options start at 512GB and can be configured up to 8TB.
The M3 Ultra chip takes performance even further, featuring a 28-32-core CPU, 60-80-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. Apple’s flagship desktop now starts with 36GB of unified memory (up from 32GB), which can be configured up to an impressive 512GB with 800GB/s bandwidth—Apple boasts this as “the most unified memory ever on a personal computer.” Storage can be expanded up to 16TB.
Apple claims the M3 Ultra delivers 1.8x faster CPU performance and 2.6x faster GPU rendering compared to the M1 Ultra. Additionally, the M3 Ultra Mac Studio can handle large language models (LLMs) with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory.
In terms of workflow capabilities, the M3 Ultra Mac Studio supports up to 24 streams of 8K ProRes video playback with H.264, HEVC, and ProRes encode and decode. It can also connect to up to 8 displays simultaneously.
Both the M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studios feature 4x Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) ports on the back, with the M3 Ultra model adding two more Thunderbolt 5 ports on the front. Additional rear connectors include 2x USB-A ports, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x 10GB/s Ethernet port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. A UHS-II SDXC card reader is located on the front. Wireless connectivity remains at Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The new Mac Studio with the M4 Max starts at RM8,999, while the M3 Ultra model begins at RM17,999. The top-tier configuration, featuring 512GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage, costs a staggering RM60,924. For more information, you can head over to the official store here.
