Apple has announced the new AirPods 5, bringing active noise cancellation (ANC) to both models alongside a redesigned open-ear fit, improved audio features and longer battery life. The new AirPods also introduce upgraded Siri AI controls and IP57 water and dust resistance, with prices starting from RM599 in Malaysia.
The AirPods 5 retain an open-ear design but feature a new multiport acoustic architecture and an improved shape designed to fit a wider range of ear shapes more comfortably. This aims to provide a more secure and comfortable fit while maintaining the open-ear listening experience.
For the first time, ANC is available on both AirPods 5 models. Apple says the new ANC system delivers up to 50% better noise cancellation compared with previous open-ear AirPods, while an upgraded Transparency mode allows users to remain aware of their surroundings when needed.
Audio quality has also been improved with a next-generation Adaptive EQ system, which is designed to deliver richer sound details. The AirPods 5 also support enhanced personalised spatial audio, providing a more immersive listening experience for compatible content.
The new AirPods introduce additional hands-free controls through Siri AI. Users can interact with Siri using head movements, including nodding to respond “yes” and shaking their head to respond “no”. This allows users to control certain interactions without needing to touch their iPhone or AirPods.
The higher-end AirPods 5 model adds stem swipe controls, allowing users to adjust the volume directly from the earbuds. This provides an additional way to control playback without reaching for a connected device.
Battery life has also been extended, with the AirPods 5 offering up to five hours of listening time with ANC enabled. This is one hour longer than the previous models. When combined with the wireless charging case, total listening time increases to up to 22 hours.
The AirPods 5 are also rated IP57 for water and dust resistance. This rating provides protection against dust and allows the earbuds to withstand temporary immersion in water, making them more suitable for use during workouts and other everyday activities.
In Malaysia, the standard AirPods 5 with a USB-C charging case is priced at RM599. The higher-end wireless charging model, which also features stem touch controls for volume adjustment, costs RM699.
