During CES 2020, Sony had announced the very first VISION-S, which is an all-electric sedan that is surprisingly handsome even though it was designed by an electronics company. The concept car looked like it was ready for mass production, but Sony said that it was just a concept and they wanted to show the world what mobility meant for Sony.
This year, Sony unveiled a second model to its VISION-S lineup, this time, it is dubbed as the VISION-S 02. The VISION-S 02 is an all-electric SUV prototype. The VISION-S 02 shares the same EV/cloud platform as the VISION-S 01, which is being tested on public roads. The VISION-S 02 offers a larger interior space and even a 7-seater configuration. Together with VISION-S 01, they will cater to a large variety of lifestyles and people’s needs.
With the launch of the VISION-S 02, Sony will also establish a new sister company called “Sony Mobility Inc.” in the spring of 2022, through which the brand intends to explore entry into the EV market.
The VISION-S 02 focuses on three aspects, which are safety, adaptability, and entertainment. Sony’s concept SUV supports safe driving by recognizing and analyzing the surrounding environment in real-time, with sensors installed all around the vehicle. These sensors include CMOS image sensors and LiDAR sensors that can accurately sense three-dimensional space. Sony aims to provide greater safety through its sensor and communication technologies and is currently conducting tests for the release of its Level 2+ advanced diver assistance systems (ADAS) on public roads.
As for the aspect of adaptability, Time-of-Flight sensors are used to provide monitoring functions for diver authentication and to watch over passengers. Intuitive gestures and voice commands that are intended to enhance the usability of the car interface were also supported. Sony wanted to deliver an environment that suits each user’s preferences, the vehicle will include a new function that allows users to personalize the vehicle. Most features of the vehicle will also be linked to the cloud via mobile communication, which includes 5G communication. Updates for the vehicle will also be reflected in the vehicle via over the air that is possible to provide security and update service functions and value-added offerings continuously.
Lastly, the entertainment aspect of the VISION-S 02 will feature seat speakers that create a three-dimensional sound field. In addition to that, the VISION-S includes a fully integrated digital video service “BRAVIA CORE”.
Hopefully, we can see Sony’s new cars on the street in the near future.
