The Sony Xperia 1 VII has arrived, and at first glance, it closely resembles its predecessor. However, two fresh color options—Moss Green and Orchid Purple—make it easier to distinguish.

Sony has stuck with the same design formula: a 6.5-inch display, a 5,000mAh battery, and a triple-camera setup on the rear. Yet, there are some notable upgrades under the hood.

The primary camera and continuous optical zoom remain unchanged—featuring a 24mm f/1.9 wide-angle lens with a 1/1.35-inch Exmor T sensor, OIS, and PDAF. The telephoto lens offers an 85mm-170mm f/2.3-f/3.5 range with a 1/3.5-inch Exmor RS sensor and retains its telemacro capability, allowing 4cm close-up shots at 120mm.

The biggest upgrade is the ultrawide camera—still 16mm but now with a brighter f/2.0 aperture (up from f/2.2) and a larger 1/1.56-inch Exmor RS sensor, 2.1x bigger than before.

Sony has packed the camera system with AI-powered Alpha technology, including real-time eye AF (for humans and animals), AI subject recognition, AI white balance, AI exposure, and AI depth. It also supports Ultra HDR for vibrant images on compatible screens. The two-stage shutter button returns, now slightly wider for better comfort.

Another carryover is the 3.5mm headphone jack, now with higher-quality gold-infused solder to reduce signal loss. Inside, the phone retains its premium Audio Integrated Circuit. There’s also a microSD slot for expanding the 256GB internal storage.

The Xperia 1 VII is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and Victus on the back.

Under the hood, it runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and a vapor chamber for cooling. Connectivity gets a boost with Wi-Fi 7 and double the Bluetooth speed of the Xperia 1 VI.

The 6.5-inch 1,080 x 2,340 OLED display is nearly identical to its predecessor but 20% brighter, with 10-bit color and a 120Hz refresh rate. Sony added dual illuminance sensors (front and back) for better brightness adjustment, plus auto color tuning to enhance visibility in bright light. The front-facing stereo speakers deliver 10% richer bass, tuned in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment.

Battery life remains strong with the same 5,000mAh capacity and 30W charging, though Sony claims two full days of use, including 36 hours of continuous video playback. Advanced battery care features (like Xperia Adaptive Charging) ensure less than 20% capacity loss over four years.

The Sony Xperia 1 VII launches with Android 15, with a promise of four major OS updates and six years of security patches. Available in Slate Black, Moss Green, and Orchid Purple, the Xperia 1 VII comes in a single 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. It will be available in Malaysia from mid-July 2025.
