Samsung officially unveils the ultra slim 5.9 mm Galaxy A8

After a couple of leaks and multiple rumors, Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A8 which has a very slim body at a mere 5.9 mm. This makes it the slimmest smartphone that Samsung has ever made beating out the 6.3 mm held by the device’s predecessor, the Galaxy A7.

The exterior design shows that the A8 remains faithful to unibody approach like the rest of the Galaxy A series but it also inherits some design cues from Samsung’s current flagship. The metal frame has some chiseled design and the front even looks like a larger Galaxy S6. The home button also has a fingerprint sensor which unlocks the phone with a simple touch.

As for its photography capabilities, the rear camera is a 16 MP camera with f/1.9 that’s similar to the one that’s on-board the flagship Galaxy S6. As for the front camera, it gets a wide angle 5 MP selfie snapper. Double tapping the home button will instantly launch the camera app anytime and it also supports  wide selfie functionality as well.

Now as for the technical specs, the Galaxy A8 has a 5.7″ Full HD Super AMOLED display, which is  a slight 0.2″ larger than its predecessor, the Galaxy A7. The Galaxy A8 gets a similar Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor (4 x 1.5 GHz, 4 x 1.0 GHz) that’s mated to 2 GB of RAM under the hood to run this device. As for its storage options, the Galaxy A8 has 16 GB or 32 GB of on-board storage. The Chinese version of the Galaxy A8 supports 4G LTE connectivity and has dual SIM slots, but the 2nd slot is a hybrid  where it doubles up as serving as MicroSD slot which offers an additional 128 GB of storage.

Despite having a larger screen, the Galaxy A8 also gets a decently large 3,050 mAh capacity battery to compensate, being a 17% increase on the Galaxy A7. Physically, the Galaxy A8 weighs a slightly heavier 151 g.

For the Malaysian market, the Samsung Galaxy A8 was recently seen in SIRIM’s database and word on the street is that it would be released with a RM 1,888 price tag.
