The Galaxy Z Fold6 is lighter, wider, and thinner than its predecessor. It only weighs 239g, which is just slightly heavier than the S24 Ultra (233g). The phone now has a slightly larger 6.3-inch outer screen (from 6.2-inch) and the edges around the phone are now less curvy compared to its predecessor.

The phone boasts an IP48 rating for water and dust resistance. It retains the dual-rail hinge, reinforced armor aluminum frame, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and a protective layer for added durability. When folded, the device is just 12.1mm thick, and when unfolded, it slims down to 5.6mm. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold6 folds completely flat with no gap in between.

The back of the phone still houses the same triple-camera setup since the Z Fold4. The phone now has a thicker camera ring design, which looks a lot like the camera protector on my phone. Samsung also removed its brand logo on the back panel, meaning you can only see the branding when you close the screen since the Samsung logo is now on the hinge cover.

Display

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6_6

The Galaxy Z Fold6 sports a 6.3-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Cover Screen, up from 6.2-inch on last year’s model thanks to a few millimeters increase in width. While the differences are noticeable when comparing the two phones side by side, in practical use, the changes are minimal and don’t significantly impact the experience of using the cover screen.

Unfolding the phone will reveal a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Samsung claims that its screen now offers a brighter display of up to 2,600 nits. It still has a 4MP Under Display Camera, which is the same as the Z Fold4. Even though the crease feels flatter, the crease looks about the same — it disappears when looking at the display straight-on, but you’ll see it from an angle.

Both cover and inner screens are top-class displays with vibrant and vivid colors. Although I typically prefer using the entire internal screen for a single app, I found split-screen mode unexpectedly handy while traveling. It was especially useful for tasks like pulling restaurant recommendations from a WhatsApp chat and inputting them directly into Google Maps, without needing to switch between apps.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6_9

Powering the Galaxy Z Fold6 is the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Galaxy with 12GB RAM and three storage options — 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The phone now offers an upgraded gaming experience, anchored by its powerful chipset and 1.6x larger vapor chamber. I must say gaming on the large 7.6-inch inner screen brings the gaming experience to another level. However, the new chipset isn’t just for gaming, it is also for the enhanced Galaxy AI features.

Software

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6_10

The Galaxy Z Fold6 runs on One UI 6.1.1 on top of Android 14 with enhanced Galaxy AI features. These features are the same as those of the Galaxy Z Flip6; you can read our full review here.

Interpreter now comes with a new conversation mode that enables both parties to conveniently view translations on the main and cover screens for more natural interactions. It also offers one-way translation, so you can easily understand when listening during lectures or any other type of presentation. Live Translate, which translates phone calls directly on your device in real time, is also now being extended beyond Samsung’s own native calling app to a selection of popular third-party apps.

The advanced editing experience with Photo Assist on the screen helps to effortlessly create professional-grade content. Portrait Studio creates a variety of different portrait styles such as 3D cartoon or watercolor for more creative possibilities. It also comes with Drawing Assist, which transforms your simple drawings into captivating works of art. Other new features include Transcript Assist in Notes, Chat Assist with Composer, and Circle to Search for solving math problems.

Camera

The Galaxy Z Fold6 packs the same triple-camera setup on the back — 12MP ultra-wide + 50MP main with OIS and Dual Pixel AF + 10MP telephoto with OIS, these cameras are the same ones as the Z Fold4.

The key selling point of the Z Fold6 is not its cameras, but it still takes decent photos. Image quality generally is impressive with daylight photos having vibrant colors and great dynamic range. The phone also produces good low-light images. However, Night mode will boost the shadows and highlight bright point sources, both the grain and the fine detail are replaced with slightly broader strokes and flattened textures.

Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6_16

The Galaxy Z Fold6 packs a 4,400mAh battery with 25W charging, not even 45W charging. Samsung didn’t increase the battery capacity compared to the Z Fold5, this is because the company prioritized bringing weight and thickness down. The battery life is great, I usually have at least 50% left at the end of the day with the always-on display enabled full time and using it for gaming and web communications.

Final Words

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6_17

Available in Silver Shadow, Pink, Navy, and three Samsung.com Exclusive colors — Crafted Black, White, and Peach, the Galaxy Z Fold6 is now available in Malaysia.

  • 256GB: RM7,299
  • 512GB: RM7,899
  • 1TB: RM9,099

Samsung pioneered the foldable phone, but now it seems that the company is still keeping the same original concept, which isn’t a good thing as there are many foldables nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a good foldable phone, but I do really want an S Pen included with a slot like the S24 Ultra, so that I don’t need to buy a special case with a pen slot.
