Samsung announced the Galaxy S23 FE earlier this month, which is the company’s latest FE series smartphone. It was sort of a surprise move since the company skipped the S22 FE. Samsung Malaysia recently sent me the review unit, and here’s my first look at the phone.

Unboxing
The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE comes in the same black box, just like many other flagship Galaxy smartphones.
Open up the box, you’ll see the phone in the black plastic wrap. There’s a compartment that houses the USB-C cable, SIM ejector tool, and user manual. That’s it pretty much for the unboxing experience, which is the same as other high-end Galaxy smartphones.
First Look
On the front, there’s a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. There’s a silver trim around the front camera cutout, I believe this is the way Samsung differentiates its smartphone from the premium segment.
The phone also has thick bezels all around, which is a pleasant surprise for a phone in this price range, but I guess this is where Samsung has to compromise.
Like the S23 | S23+, the back of the S23 FE features the same three-camera ring design, but its back glass doesn’t have a matte finish. It has an aluminum frame, but the frame isn’t polished like the S23 | S23+.
The Galaxy S23 FE features a triple-camera setup on the back — 12MP ultra-wide + 50MP main with OIS + 8MP 3x telephoto, a pretty familiar setup except for a slightly downgraded telephoto camera. The front camera is now a 10MP sensor, its predecessors have a 32MP selfie camera.
Other features include IP68 water and dust resistance, One UI 5.1 on top of Android 13, and an Exynos 2200 processor. Yes, we are getting the Exynos variant instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. After using the phone for a few days, I roughly know why the Galaxy S23 FE exists in 2023. Of course, there are still many things to test out, so be sure to stay tuned for the full review.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is now available in Malaysia with four color options available — Mint, Cream, Graphite, and Purple. Pricing is as below:
