Unboxing

Just like its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in a thin black box with a Burgundy S at the front, which clearly indicates my review unit is the Burgundy variant. Samsung plays with negative space for the entire package design, which you can see the big 22 behind the letter S.

Opening up the box, you’ll see the phone sitting on the top, and there’s a pull tap for you to lift up the phone. Unlike the S21 Ultra, this year’s Ultra model is boxier with a flat top and bottom, just like the Note20 Ultra.

Once you lifted up the phone, you’ll see another box, which has the SIM ejector tool, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and the paperwork.

It seems that the charging brick won’t be returning to the phone packaging, at least for Samsung’s high-end phones right now. The Galaxy S22 Ultra now also supports 45W wired Super Fast Charging 2.0, you’ll have to purchase it separately.

Similar to what I mentioned in the first look article, the Galaxy S22 Ultra looks more like the successor of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra. The Contour Cut Camera design from the S21 Ultra is now gone, it doesn’t have a huge camera bump, but now with six cutouts for the cameras, sensors, and LED flash.

One minor yet crucial detail you need to take Note though (pun intended), the Galaxy S22 Ultra doesn’t come with a pre-installed screen protector. There are two reasons behind this omission:

  • Samsung believes it is pretty durable as it features an Armor Aluminum frame with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ at the front and back
  • There are too many third-party screen protectors in the market, this accessory will lead to waste, Samsung does for the environment

Still, if you wish to purchase the screen protector for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung is actually selling the official screen protector here.

As you can see, the Galaxy S22 Ultra (left) looks pretty identical to the Note20 Ultra (right) next to it. The Note20 Ultra is just a tiny longer than the S22 Ultra. The Burgundy S22 Ultra has a darker shade compared to the Mystic Bronze Note20 Ultra. Which color do you prefer? Let us know in the comment section below.

Both S22 Ultra and Note20 Ultra have a slot for the S-Pen, which is at the same position. The S Pen for the S22 Ultra is actually quite similar to the Note20 Ultra’s, but with some improvements here and there. One noticeable improvement is Samsung has reduced the S Pen latency to just 2.8ms (from 9ms), thanks to the AI-based coordinate prediction technology.
