The OPPO Reno7 Z is the company’s latest mid-range device that just arrived in Malaysia. Basically, it is the younger brother to the Reno7 and Reno7 Pro. I’ve been using the phone for a couple of weeks, and here’s the full review!
OPPO Reno7 Z Specs
- 6.43-inch Full HD+ 60Hz AMOLED display
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor
- 8GB RAM
- 128GB storage
- Cameras
- Rear: 64MP main + 2MP monochrome + 2MP macro
- Front: 16MP
- 4,500mAhmAh battery with 33W SuperVOOC
- ColorOS 12 (Based on Android 11)
Minimalist Design
Compared to last year’s Reno6 Z, OPPO took a different approach for this gen model. The OPPO Reno7 Z has a boxier design with a hole-punch selfie camera at the top left corner. The bezel below the screen is still pretty thick, something you would expect for a phone at this price range.
The power button, volume rocker, SIM slot, 3.5mm audio jack, and USB-C port are all located in the same position. This time around, the phone has flat sides, maybe isn’t as comfortable to hold as its predecessor.
The back features the OPPO Glow Design, which reflects different shades of rainbow colors. One unique feature of the phone is the Dual Orbit Lights, which illuminates lights around the cameras to draw attention to all-important calls and messages. Personally, it’s not actually that useful as I’m used to not having a notification light on my phone.
AMOLED Display
The OPPO Reno7 Z sports a 6.43-inch Full HD+ 60Hz AMOLED display, which is quite similar to last year’s Reno6 Z. The display looks good, if you are okay with 60Hz refresh rate then it’s good for you.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 Processor
Powering the OPPO Reno7 Z is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The phone performs quite decent for your day-to-day usage, but don’t expect it to be buttery smooth when it comes to graphics-intensive games. It still has a RAM disk feature where a certain amount of internal storage is allocated to be treated as “RAM”.
ColorOS 12
The OPPO Reno7 Z runs on ColorOS 12 based on Android 11. The overall user experience is pretty much the same as before with some minor improvements. You get to customize the Dual Orbit Lights feature in settings, which is an exclusive feature for the Reno7 Z. The overall user interface is quite clean, but the amount of pre-installed software and bloatware is annoying.
64MP Main Camera
The OPPO Reno7 Z packs a triple-camera setup on the back — 64MP main + 2MP monochrome + 2MP macro. Sadly, OPPO has replaced the 8MP ultra-wide camera from the Reno6 Z with a 2MP monochrome sensor, which is a letdown for the Reno7 Z. The front-facing camera is now a 16MP unit, note that the Reno6 Z actually has a 32MP selfie camera.
Image quality generally is quite decent, but you now don’t get to shoot ultra-wide photos. When turned on the AI scene enhancement feature, photos are more vibrant and eye-pleasing, but sometimes it’ll be over-enhanced. Also, I find that the 64MP mode doesn’t shoot sharper images, sometimes the 16MP default mode shoots images with greater details.
4,500mAh Battery
The OPPO Reno7 Z packs a larger 4,500mAh battery that supports 33W SuperVOOC charging. I was able to get more than 6 hours of screen-on-time, which is better than its predecessor. The phone is able to last up to two days if you are not a heavy user.
Final Words
Retailing at RM1,699, the OPPO Reno7 Z is definitely a premium mid-range phone. It has some unique features such as the Dual Orbit Lights and the OPPO Glow Design. However, OPPO has really cut down certain important features, especially on the camera side. If you want a phone that looks good and can get everything done, it’s not a bad choice actually, unless you compare its rivals.
