The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra was launched back in July, which is the company’s latest flagship smartphone. Being the second iteration to carry the new “Pura” name, HUAWEI wants to redefine what a camera phone can be, and the Pura 80 Ultra feels like a bold step forward.

Unboxing

The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra arrives in a large, premium-looking box — a nice change of pace compared to the increasingly minimal packaging we’ve seen from other brands lately. Inside, you’ll find quite a generous bundle. Most notably, HUAWEI includes a 100W power adapter with a dual-port design that supports both USB-A and USB-C connections (though only one can be used at a time), along with a 6A-rated USB-C cable.
You’ll also get a protective case that matches the phone’s color and features the signature Pura triangle pattern, adding both style and practicality. To top it off, HUAWEI has pre-applied a plastic screen protector on the display — saving you the trouble of getting one separately.
Design
The Pura 80 Ultra stands out with a premium finish and rugged durability. It features a sleek aluminum frame with a glass front and back, weighing 233.5g. The back houses a large, triangular camera module that includes an innovative dual-telephoto system. The camera bump makes the top of the phone feel heavy.
Durability is a highlight: the device boasts IP68/IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance. The 2nd-Gen Crystal Armor Kunlun Glass protects the front and back, claiming to be 16 times more scratch-resistant and 25 times better at drop resistance compared to its predecessor.
In terms of ergonomics, the larger 6.8-inch body means it’s not a compact phone, but the premium materials and solid build make it feel high-quality and comfortable for daily use.
Display

The Pura 80 Ultra features a 6.8-inch Full HD+ LTPO OLED display, supporting 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, HDR, and a claimed peak brightness of 3,000 nits. This results in vibrant colors, deep contrast, smooth scrolling, and good outdoor readability. However, I do find that the brightness is adequate but less than top flagships under harsh sunlight.
Performance

Under the hood is the 7nm Kirin 9020 chipset backed by 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Day-to-day performance is smooth: apps open quickly, UI transitions are fluid, and the 120Hz refresh helps input feel responsive.
In daily tasks—browsing, multitasking, light gaming—it’s smooth and responsive. However, in benchmark-heavy scenarios or the most demanding gaming titles, it does lag behind some top-tier flagships using newer 4nm or 3nm chipsets.
EMUI 15.0
The HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra runs on EMUI 15.0, which is the international solution of HarmonyOS 5. This latest iteration introduces a few meaningful upgrades — improved lockscreen customization, smoother multitasking, and new gestures and emoji options. Returning features like the interactive and magazine themes, enhanced Celia assistant, improved security, a more capable Health app, and the Ark Engine also make the interface feel faster and more efficient in daily use.
That said, EMUI 15 for global units still runs on Android 12 underneath, which feels a bit dated considering most current flagships have already moved on. App installations are handled by AppGallery by default, though users can still sideload APKs via stores like APK Pure, or use GBox, MicroG, or Aurora Store if they need access to Google apps and the Play Store. On a positive note, Huawei seems to have cut down most of the ads and pop-ups that appeared in earlier versions.
When it comes to AI, HUAWEI’s international EMUI still trails behind the competition. Long-pressing the power button brings up Celia, HUAWEI’s own voice assistant — it works fine for basic tasks but isn’t quite as capable as Siri or Google Assistant. Interestingly, the Chinese version integrates DeepSeek R1 for a smarter experience, but that feature isn’t available on EMUI.
As for AI imaging tools, HUAWEI offers only AI Smart Remove in the Gallery app for object erasing.
Overall, EMUI 15 remains a refined and customizable system that runs smoothly, but its Android 12 base and limited AI capabilities mean it still can’t fully match the flexibility and ecosystem integration of regular Android phones.
Camera

Here’s where the Pura 80 Ultra truly shines. The phone packs a 50MP 1-inch main camera with a variable aperture (f/1.6–f/4.0), a 40MP ultrawide, and a unique 50MP dual-telephoto system — one for medium zoom and another for periscope shots up to 9.4x.
In daylight, the Pura 80 Ultra captures incredible detail with realistic colors and a wide dynamic range. Low-light performance is equally impressive — the large sensor and RYYB color filter work wonders in challenging lighting.
Zoom quality is excellent, and the transition between lenses feels seamless. The variable aperture system also helps when shooting portraits or close-ups, giving you real optical depth of field rather than a digital blur.
Video performance is solid too, supporting 4K 120fps and Dolby Vision recording. It’s one of the most capable smartphone cameras you can get right now.
Battery Life

The Pura 80 Ultra packs a 5,170mAh battery, which comfortably lasts a full day and a half with moderate use. Charging is impressively quick, with 100W wired and 80W wireless support — a full top-up takes around 25 minutes via cable.
The phone also supports reverse charging, both wired and wireless, so you can use it as a power bank for your accessories.
Final Words

Retailing at RM6,599, the HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra isn’t just another flagship — it’s a statement. From its unique camera system and premium build to its ultra-fast charging and stunning display, it’s easily one of the most complete smartphones of 2025.
Of course, the lack of native Google services is still the biggest limitation for most users, and the Kirin 9020’s raw power lags behind current flagships. But if you can live without Google Pay and you care more about photography and design, the Pura 80 Ultra absolutely delivers.
