HTC has just officially announced two new U smartphones — U Ultra and U Play. Both smartphones come with the company’s new HTC Sense Companion AI, a “liquid surface” back, and without an audio jack.
HTC U Ultra
The HTC U Ultra sports a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super LCD 5 display with a secondary display (2-inch, 160×1040) on top, just like the LG V20. Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB RAM and 64/128GB expandable storage.
In terms of camera, the U Ultra packs a 12MP UltraPixel 2 camera with 1.55μm pixel behind a f/1.8 aperture lens with OIS. Besides laser autofocus, the device also has PDAF tech in the mix. Selfie wise, the device has a 16MP front-facing unit with UltraPixel mode.
HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi edition speakers made a return with separated sound design, similar to the HTC 10. The device also features four omnidirectional mics for you to record 360-degree audio. Say goodbye to the 3.5mm audio jack as the HTC U Ultra doesn’t have one, which means you can only plug into the USB Type-C port if you still prefer the wired headset.
The HTC USonic technology analyzes your inner ears with a sonar-like pulse, and then adapts to you. It’s like having a sound engineer in your phone.
Juicing up the device is a 3,000mAh battery, which can be charged quickly thanks to the Quick Charge 3.0 technology.
The HTC U Play shares some features from the U Ultra — no audio jack, HTC USonic technology, and a 16MP front camera with UltraPixel mode.
The device has a smaller 5.2-inch Full HD Super LCD display covered by a Gorilla Glass. Powering it is a MediaTek Helio P10 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable storage. Unlike the U Ultra, the U Play has a 16MP f/2.0 rear camera with PDAF tech and OIS. Juicing up the device is a 2,500mAh battery with 5V/2A fast charging supported. The device still has a USB Type-C port, but it’s slower. It also only has 2 microphones with noise cancellation instead of 4 like the U Ultra.
Both devices will be running on Android 7.0 Nougat and available in four colors: Brilliant Black, Ice White, Sapphire Blue, and Cosmetic Pink. Unfortunately, there’s no information about the launch date of both devices in Malaysia, but both devices are likely to launch by the end of next month.
