A couple weeks ago, we had a blind camera shootout comparing the ASUS ZenFone 3 and Honor 8 without letting you know which photos are taken with which phones. As the voting ended last week, it’s time to reveal the results.
ASUS ZenFone 3 vs Honor 8
- 16MP vs 12MP Dual-Camera (RGB + Monochrome)
- f/2.0 vs f/2.2
- 1.12 µm vs 1.25 µm
- TriTech AF System vs Hybrid AF System
- 4-Axis OIS vs No OIS
Disclaimers:
- All the camera samples are taken in auto mode;
- Except for the “Camera Sample 10A” and “Camera Sample 10B”, which are taken with manual focus;
- Both cameras are set to the maximum resolution that they are capable to take (ZenFone 3 in 16MP and Honor 8 in 12MP);
- ASUS ZenFone 3 has “Auto HDR” feature on by default, so we didn’t turn off;
- All camera samples taken by the Honor 8 are using its dual-camera setup, we didn’t block one of its lenses during photo shooting.
The Results
Camera Sample 1
Camera Sample 1A: ASUS ZenFone 3 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
Camera Sample 1B: Honor 8 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
The first set, 75% of voters voted for Camera Sample 1A, which is taken with the ZenFone 3. As we mentioned in the beginning, the ZenFone 3 has “Auto HDR” feature on by default, which means it’s basically the battle between HDR vs non-HDR. As you can see from the samples above, Camera Sample 1A is much brighter and more contrast. Not to say it’s unfair, we can only say that ASUS did a good job by including “Auto HDR” feature in the camera app.
Camera Sample 2

Camera Sample 2B: ASUS ZenFone 3 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
The second set result is pretty same as the first one, this time Camera Sample 2B is taken with the ZenFone 3, and 62% voters voted for it. Yet again, the ZenFone 3 took advantage with its “Auto HDR” feature.

Camera Sample 4B: Honor 8 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
As the fourth set is pretty similar to the previous three sets, 63% of voters voted for Camera Sample 4A, which is taken with the ZenFone 3. Unlike the previous three sets, these two camera sample qualities are pretty close actually, but when you look at the lower half of both photos, you’ll see that Camera Sample 4A has the advantage.
Camera Sample 5
Camera Sample 5A: Honor 8 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
Camera Sample 5B: ASUS ZenFone 3 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
The fifth set has a different result, this time 83% of voters voted for Camera Sample 5A, which is taken with the Honor 8. It’s obvious that Camera Sample 5B color temperature is pretty warm, which probably is the main reason why most voters voted for the first one. The Honor 8 did a pretty good job this round, as everything just feels so right, from contrast level, detail to color temperature.
Camera Sample 6

The eighth round is pretty hard to decide for me to be honest, I believe this happened to many of the voters as well. 59% of voters voted for Camera Sample 8A, which is taken with the ZenFone 3. And yes, this time many of you actually preferred a warmer photo, it actually looks like filter been applied to this photo. No, it’s not!
Camera Sample 9
Camera Sample 9A: Honor 8 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
Camera Sample 9B: ASUS ZenFone 3 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
The penultimate round sees 77% of voters voted for Camera Sample 9A, which is taken with the Honor 8. The ZenFone 3 appeared to have the same problem again, the photo just not that eye pleasing and a little bit overexposed.
Camera Sample 10
Camera Sample 10A: Honor 8 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
Camera Sample 10B: ASUS ZenFone 3 (Click here to view full resolution photo)
We used both devices in manual modes for the final round, actually just to use the manual focus function to create the bokeh effect. This time, 83% of voters voted for Camera Sample 10A, which is taken with the Honor 8 again. Both camera samples look pretty similar actually, but it seems that the Honor 8 managed to capture more eye pleasing photo, you can see that there’s a slight difference in terms of color tuning.
Conclusion
So, who’s the winner? Well, if you look at the results, the ZenFone 3 actually won it by 6:4. However, it doesn’t mean that the ZenFone 3 is the better one, I can only conclude that it’s a tie. Both devices are capable of taking great photos, and you can always use editing apps like Snapseed and VSCO to edit your photos. Both devices have different camera features, the ZenFone 3 has OIS+EIS for capturing more steady photos, while the Honor 8 comes with a dual-camera setup, which you can play with its DoF (depth of field) feature. That’s been said, it’s a tie!
