It’s that time of the year again when we get the new iPhones. This time around, Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 series, which is the successor to last year’s iPhone 13 lineup. However, Apple has ditched the mini iPhone this year and replaced it with the bigger model — the iPhone 14 Plus.

The regular 14 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Display just like last year, while the 14 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR Display. Both models have an OLED panel and the same notch from last year’s lineup.

Powering the iPhone 14 lineup is the A15 Bionic chip from last year, but it’s the same one with a 5-core GPU that was inside the 13 Pro models rather than the 4-core version of the vanilla iPhone 13.

In terms of camera, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus still pack a dual-camera setup on the back — 12MP main with sensor-shift OIS + 12MP ultra-wide. The main camera now uses a larger sensor with 1.9µm pixels (up from 1.7µm) and has a brighter f/1.5 aperture (up from f/1.6).

The iPhone 14 lineup features Photonic Engine, building on Deep Fusion, which dramatically improves low-light photos. It also comes with Action Mode, which provides gimbal-like stabilization and it also supports capturing video in Dolby Vision HDR.

Both models still use a notched design for the TrueDepth camera, which now has autofocus for the first time. The front camera is now able to capture 38% more light for better low-light performance, thanks to the brighter f/1.9 aperture (up from f/2.2).

Additionally, the new models have the Emergency SOS via satellite feature, which combines custom components deeply integrated with software to allow antennas to connect directly to a satellite, enabling messaging with emergency services when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

It’s a text-only service and will be used mostly for emergencies, but it does support two-way communication so you will be notified when rescue is on the way. The Find My app will also be able to share your location with friends so that they can keep an eye on you.

Emergency SOS via satellite will be available to users in the US and Canada in November, and the service will be free for two years.

Just like the new Apple Watches, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also support Crash Detection, which uses the 3-axis gyro sensor and a new High G-force accelerometer that can detect up to 256Gs. When the phone detects a severe car crash, the device will check in with the user and dial emergency services if they are unresponsive after a 10-second countdown. Emergency responders will receive the user’s device location, which is also shared with the user’s emergency contacts.
