The latest Apple M5 chip is now official, debuting in the refreshed MacBook Pro and Vision Pro. The new processor delivers a massive leap in AI and graphics performance, boasting over 4x the peak GPU compute performance for AI compared to the previous M4.
Built on third-generation 3nm technology, the Apple M5 introduces a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core for enhanced AI processing. Its 10-core CPU consists of four performance cores and six efficiency cores, offering up to 15% better multithreaded performance than the M4.
Apple has also increased the memory bandwidth by nearly 30%, now reaching 153GB/s, with support for up to 32GB of unified memory. Overall graphics performance sees a 45% boost, while the new ray tracing engine and second-generation dynamic caching promise smoother gameplay, more realistic 3D visuals, and faster rendering times for demanding creative tasks.
According to Apple, every compute block of the M5 is optimised for AI workloads, enabling dramatically faster processing for applications like diffusion models in Draw Things or running large language models locally via webAI.
