Besides the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple also announced the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both phones come with new cameras, a new notch design, and a new chipset.
First thing first, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both feature a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen, Apple called it Dynamic Island. Dynamic Island enables new ways to interact with iPhone, featuring a design that blends the line between hardware and software, adapting in real-time to show important alerts, notifications, and activities.
Without impeding content on the screen, Dynamic Island maintains an active state to allow users easier access to controls with a simple tap-and-hold. Ongoing background activities like Maps, Music, or a timer remain visible and interactive, and third-party apps in iOS 16 that provide information like sports scores and ride-sharing with Live Activities can take advantage of Dynamic Island.
Available in two sizes — 6.1″ for 14 Pro and 6.7″ for 14 Pro Max, both phones include a new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion that features the Always-On display for the first time ever on iPhone, enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and multiple power-efficient technologies. The new display has up to 2,000 nits of brightness, which is twice as bright as the 13 Pro.
Like last year’s models, the new 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have a triple-camera setup on the back, but Apple has upgraded the cameras. The main camera is a 48MP quad-pixel camera with 2nd gen sensor-shift OIS, and it shoots 12MP photos by default. You can still shoot a full 48MP photo with ProRAW though.
The high-res main camera enables a 2x telephoto option that uses the middle 12MP of the sensor for full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom. There’s also a new 12MP ultra-wide camera with large 1.4μm pixels and a 12MP 3x telephoto camera with OIS.
Powering both models is the new A16 Bionic chip that comes with a six-core CPU, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. The 16-core Neural Engine included in the A16 is capable of 17 trillion operations per second, while the 5-core GPU comes with 50% higher memory bandwidth.
Like the vanilla models, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also feature Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection. Both phones will be available in Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple. You can pre-order it on 16 September with availability following on 23 September, pricing as below:
