Apple announced the new iPad mini (2024), one of the most minor updates in iPad history. Replacing the 2021 model, the 7th gen iPad mini is powered by the Apple A17 Pro chip which made its debut on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro models. The new model will also be in line to receive Apple Intelligence when it begins its gradual rollout with iPadOS 18.1.
Apart from the chipset, the new iPad mini also features 128GB base storage (from 64GB). It also has updated connectivity with support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a faster USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2 port.
The new mini now also supports the Apple Pencil Pro stylus. Apple Pencil Pro can sense a user’s squeeze, bringing up a tool palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colors without interrupting the creative process. A custom haptic engine delivers a light tap that provides confirmation when users squeeze, double-tap, or snap to a Smart Shape for a remarkably intuitive experience. Users can roll Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of the tool they’re using. Rotating the barrel changes the orientation of the shaped pen and brush tools, just like pen and paper, and with Apple Pencil hover, users can visualize the exact orientation of a tool before making a mark. Apple Pencil Pro features support for Find My, and it pairs, charges, and is stored through a new magnetic interface on the new iPad mini.
The tablet will come in four colors — space grey, starlight, purple, and the new blue color. The rest of the specs are identical to the 2021 model — 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display with TrueTone feature and rounded corners, power button with Touch ID, 12MP rear camera with True Tone flash, and 12MP 120-degree ultra-wide front camera with the Centre Stage feature.
