The Honor 8 Is Bringing Black Back

Introduction

The Honor 8 Is Bringing Black Back_1

Black is a pretty common color we used to see on a smartphone, but ever since Apple introduced iPhones in Gold and Rose Gold, we don’t actually see smartphones in black anymore. Earlier last month, Apple announced the brand new iPhone 7/7 Plus in Matte Black and Jet Black. Yes, the black is back! Hold on, Honor actually announced the Honor 8 back in July, which is two months before the iPhone 7/7 Plus, and it comes in four different color options, including Midnight Black. So, what are the differences between the iPhone 7 in Jet Black and Honor 8 in Midnight Black? Today we are going to take a look at both smartphones.

Build

As I mentioned just now, we don’t actually see smartphones in black nowadays. Currently the latest smartphones in Malaysia with black color option are the iPhone 7 and Honor 8. Not all black colors are the same, that’s why Apple and Honor named their blacks differently.

The iPhone 7 in Jet Black has a glossy reflective finish, constructed with strong 7000 Series aluminium. The Jet Black finish was achieved through a nine‑step process of anodization and polishing, you can’t tell where the aluminium ends and the glass begins.

As for the Honor 8, it comes with a unique 15-layer craftsmanship and 3D grate design on the back. The Aurora glass gives the device a glossy look that is able to reflect beautifully and create brilliant light reflections. Its Midnight Black finish is really as black as midnight.

Smudges and Fingerprints

We all already know that the iPhone 7 in Jet Black is pretty prone to smudges and fingerprints. Not long ago, I actually hands-on the iPhone 7 in Jet Black during the midnight launch. I’m not surprised that the device picked up a lot of smudges and fingerprints within an hour. Yes, many people touched it before me.

On the other hand, the Honor 8 has a smooth and glass build that are designed to minimize fingerprint marks. It seems that Honor made a right decision for choosing glass material, you’ll find out more in the next segment.

Scratches and Durability

The iPhone 7 in Jet Black is well-known with its scratch ability. Yes, the Jet Black finish picks up scratches pretty easily. Whether you are sliding in and out the device of your pocket, or just laying micro-movements while laid down on the table, you’ll micro scratches for sure. Apple even mentioned in the footnote on the iPhone 7’s dedicated page.

Here’s what you’ll find on the iPhone 7’s dedicated page:

Crafted from bead-blasted aluminum, our new black model has a rich, deep matte finish. The high-gloss jet black finish was achieved through a new feat of design engineering — a remarkably precise, nine-step process of anodization and polishing.2 The end result is so purely and continuously black, you can’t tell where the aluminum ends and the glass begins. The dark side, indeed.

And this is what Apple mentioned in the footnote

2. The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.
