Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro Review: Your Fitness Style

Introduction

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro Review_1

This is the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro, a smart fitness tracker with built-in GPS tracking. The Samsung Gear series is all about smart wearable devices, but not all have the same functionalities. Without further ado, let’s jump straight into the full review!

Unboxing

The device comes in a small-sized box, a pretty familiar theme I must say since the Galaxy S7. The bottom right corner of the box shows the size of the wristband. In our case, we got the large wristband.

The box contains the device itself, charging dock, and manual guide. Overall, the Gear Fit2 Pro comes with minimal accessories, it doesn’t have two sizes of wristband like the Gear S3, or even a proper charger. However, duly note that the Gear Fit2 Pro is almost half the price of the Gear S3. So, you get what you paid!

That Curve

The Gear Fit2 Pro comes with a 1.5-inch curved Super AMOLED display with the resolution of 216 x 432 pixels. Though the resolution seems to be quite low, it actually has 332ppi pixel density, which shows sharp content with vivid colors. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with the ambient light sensor, which means you’ll have to adjust the screen brightness yourself. Something I do enjoy a lot of my Gear S3.

The curved display blends perfectly to the curvy design of the band. It has 2 buttons on the side — Back and Home/Power buttons. Since it doesn’t have the rotating bezel, all you can do to navigate the band is to touch the screen.

Underneath the band, there’s the charging contact point and the heart rate sensor. The band is also 5ATM (atmospheric rating) water resistance for aquatic sports. Sadly, it’s harder to measure my heart rate since I have extremely thin wrists, thin people like me should either get the small size wristband or gain weight!

You can easily remove the wristband without using any tools, but currently, there aren’t many official straps you can get. The inner strap comes with a wavy surface for a better breathability.

Thanks to the small notch underneath the ring hoop, the excess band is able to hold down securely, which provides a better experience of wearing it.

Software & Features

As I mentioned earlier, the Gear Fit2 Pro comes with a touch display for you to navigate. The most left of the home screen is where you find all your notifications.

The home button also doubles up as the app drawer button when you are on the home screen. From there you can access the apps you installed. One interesting feature of the band is its 4GB internal storage, which allows you to store some running tunes. What even better is you can actually save offline Spotify music if you have a Spotify Premium account. Just pair your Bluetooth earphones and you are good to go, no phone required.

Pulling down from the top of the screen while on the home screen will show you some quick settings such as screen brightness level and Do Not Disturb mode.

The Samsung Gear app is available for all Android devices, and iPhones. However, it’s better to pair the band with an Android device for a complete experience. In my case, I paired the band with the Galaxy Note8 since I do have a unit with me as well. The app shows information about the battery level, storage, and RAM of the band. You can also customize the band like changing the watch faces, notification configuration, app management, send SOS message, and more.

The Samsung Health app consolidates the tracking data from the Gear Fit2 Pro and consolidates them into useful & easy to understand format. It comes with quite a few tracking features such as steps counter, heart rate monitor, sleep tracking, and more.

Battery Life

The Gear Fit2 Pro has a 200mAh battery, which the company claims to have around 3~4 days of battery life for typical usage. Based on my test, I was able to get around 3 days of battery life on a single charge with 30% of screen brightness and enabling instant messaging notification & vibration. Charging the band is relatively fast as well since it has a small battery.

Final Words

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro Review_15

Retailing at RM799, the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is definitely one of the best smart fitness trackers you can get right now. It is a perfect fitness tracking band for those who have an active lifestyle, even though it is a little bit pricey. There aren’t many fitness tracking bands like the Gear Fit2 Pro — good in fitness tracking while staying fashionable. However, if you want a smartwatch, it’s better for you to get an Android Wear watch or the Samsung Gear S3 for a complete smartwatch experience. The Gear Fit2 Pro is not a smartwatch after all.

Yay

  • Fashionable design
  • Great fitness tracking features
  • Great battery life

Nay

  • Doesn’t come with a proper charger
  • A bit pricey
