MWC 2017: OPPO Unveils 5x Dual Camera Zoom Technology for Smartphones

As expected, OPPO has officially unveiled the 5x Dual Camera Zoom technology, the world’s first periscope-style dual-camera technology for smartphones.

The new technology offers 5x lossless zoom capability on a smartphone, which is even more compared to smartphones like the iPhone 7 Plus and ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom, both offer 2x and 2.3x zoom, respectively. Users will also get to enjoy an image stabilization capability like never before in the thin and sleek body.

The technology was inspired by the idea of a periscope on a submarine, which utilizes wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Unlike the iPhone 7 Plus and ZenFone 3 Zoom, OPPO shifted the angle of the telephoto lens by 90 degrees, which gives the lens more space for a deep zoom. A periscope-style prism then directs the path of the light entering the camera by 90 degrees and sends the image through the telephoto lens when the user zooms in on a subject or object.

The 5x lossless zoom technology is actually a 3x optical zoom matched with a proprietary image fusion technology for digital zoom. The 5x dual camera module is only 5.7mm thick thanks to the periscope-style construction, which is even thinner than a typical 2x optical zoom lens in a smartphone.

OPPO also took a new approach and applied OIS directly to the telephoto lens, instead of the wide-angle lens. The new OIS solution performance of previous generations by 40% and the prism mechanism dynamically adjusts its angle at precise increments of 0.0025 degrees. This technology ensures that images are clear and stable even at full 5x zoom.

OPPO hasn’t revealed any smartphone with this technology, though, at the moment. Let’s hope we can see an OPPO smartphone with this technology this year.
