Unboxing & First Impressions: OPPO R9s

OPPO recently launched the R9s in Malaysia, which will be available for purchase from 14th January 2017 onwards. Guess what? We just received our review unit right before the device goes on sale. If you are interested in getting one, here’s a quick unboxing and first impressions of the OPPO R9s.

The box of the R9s is pretty similar to the F1 Plus and F1s. Like I said before, I really miss the premium design of the N3 and R5 retail boxes.

Flipping over the box, you’ll see the main features of the OPPO R9s — 16MP rear camera with Sony IMX398 sensor, VOOC Flash Charge, 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, and Flash Touch Access (a.k.a fingerprint sensor).

Pulling out the first layer of the box, you’ll see a big white box with OPPO logo on the top. Now, this white box actually looks and feels pretty premium.

Open up the white box, the R9s is just sitting on the top layer of the box wrapped in a plastic wrapper, just like the F1s and F1 Plus.

After taking out the phone, there’s a SIM ejector tool. When you see a SIM ejector tool, it means that the OPPO R9s doesn’t have removable back cover.

This is the last layer of the box, which has the VOOC Flash Charger, USB cable, and earphones. To be honest, I personally think that OPPO should have included the in-ear earphones, not this typical one.

So, that’s all in the box! Not to forget that there’s also a TPU protective case and user guide as well.

I really appreciate OPPO included a protective case in the box. Additionally, the screen protector has been applied on the phone as well when I first opened the box.

The OPPO R9s actually looks similar to the F1 Plus with some slight changes. The phone has a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display covered by a curved 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Its bezel is pretty thin, which really helps a lot in making the phone form factor smaller for better handling.

The home button below the screen isn’t clickable this time, it also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor is faster than the F1 Plus/F1s as you don’t need to click the button anymore, just touch it and it’ll unlock the screen.

Another noticeable difference is the redesigned antenna lines, 3 on the top and 3 below. Each antenna line measures at only 0.3mm thin. The 16MP rear camera now also features f/1.7 aperture lens with PDAF tech, which should be able to capture better photos than the F1 Plus.

Overall, the R9s feels same as the F1 Plus as there are not many changes in terms of design. However, I did notice big improvements in terms of performance as the company has switched to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. We can’t really conclude anything at the moment, guess we’ll have to wait for the full review then.
